What does the permalink do?

well  it allows you to make comments to a particular post. even in some locations of the forums. why it says permalink instead of "comments" I will never know

The permalink thingy is specific to the Answers section of the forum. Considering there is no way to reply to posters other than the OP, this is the only way to post a comment which will be notified to anyone who posted in the topic. On the contrary, editing a post is NOT notified to the participants in the thread. Not convenient (it's been discussed and complained about quite a lot), but so far it's all what we have.

It can also be used in the contests section of the forums

That's true, but in the contests, it is called "comments", not "Permalink", and these comments cannot be kudoed unlike they are here.

Oops, sorry, I just saw the "Permalink" button in the contests, but since they are all closed, I have no idea what clicking on this does! :P

My biggest grips is why is there NOT a little indicator thingy to show which Permalink under a poster has comments under it "P If I don;t follow the email post then I have to search each in turn, which is the case since I do SL Answers from 4 different PCs
