First of all i don't think LL viewers support free temporary images. To answer your question, you can't compare a mesh model with a texture. Textures don't affect other things, when you upload a mesh however, the server has to calculate the physics or collisions. That will not work ofcourse, since you should be the only one seeing its effects. The server can't calculate one thing for your viewer and another thing for another viewer.

I'd like to add a clarification: Right, LL viewers don't support temporary textures, but they do support local textures (free). Which serve almost the same purpose as temporary textures. The differencies: • Temporay textures: Everybody can see them • Local textures: Only the person who uses the local texture can see it, others not How to use local textures? • Edit a prim • Activate "Texture" tab in the edit window • Click the texture image • In the "PICK: TEXTURE" window select "Local" and click the "Add" button • In the "Open" window select texture from your computer, click "Open" • In the "PICK: TEXTURE" window click the image name and click "Ok" Done. Nice feature is if you edit the the image in your computer and save it, the result is shown in SL immediately. So local textures are not downloaded to SL at all, but the image in your computer applied to a prim is shown in SL viewer for the user. The dowside is naturally that others cannot see the texture, so it's no use if one wants to show textures to somebody else before uploading and paying for the upload. Linden Lab is not ever going to support temporary textures as it is a hack. When Linden Lab implemets server side avatar baking then temporary textures will not work any more in TPV viewers. But local textures will continue to function in all viewers, Linden Lab viewers and TPV viewers as they are officially supported by the Lab.
