Why am I instant crashing every time I try and texture my mesh pieces?

Are you wearing it? If so, rez it on the ground and then try again.

There are two bugs that may be at work here:-

1. The 'Editting Mesh While Worn' bug, which will crash you and as far as I know present in all viewers.

2. The 'Viewing Mesh with 32-bit (alpha) textures on surfaces' bug, which will also crash you and is in a smaller sub-set of viewers.

If the second issue seems more likely, you may need to use a different viewer.

If you have an ATI graphics card, your problem may be https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-28607 .  ATI/AMD is not focused on development for programs like SL that use OpenGL, so SL residents have a long history of problems with ATI cards.  If that's the issue you face, the workaround while you wait for the developers to figure out a permanent fix is to 

  • Roll back to Catalyst 12.1
  • Turn off "Enable highlighting of selected prims"
