Firestorm 4 (32-bit) with Linux Mint 12 (64-bit), Window Creation Error

Running Linux Mint 12 (64-bit) and have installed the latest ATI Radeon graphics drivers, the AMD Catalyst 12.3 drivers. Other OpenGL software such as SuperTuxKart, GLXgears, Imprudence (64-bit) all work properly.

Attempted to install 32-bit libraries / dependencies so that Firestorm Viewer (32-bit) may run by:

apt-get install ia32-libs ia32-libs-gtk ia32-libs-sdl

 

Downloaded and decompressed the Firestorm 4 (32-bit) package for Linux. In terminal, I did a ./firestorm to run the viewer and a flood of error messages appears along with a popup window saying "window creation error".

You are running the Firestorm Viewer on a x86_64 platform.  The
most common problems when launching the Viewer (particularly
'bin/do-not-directly-run-firestorm-bin: not found' and 'error while
loading shared libraries') may be solved by installing your Linux
distribution's 32-bit compatibility packages.
For example, on Ubuntu and other Debian-based Linuxes you might run:
$ sudo apt-get install ia32-libs ia32-libs-gtk ia32-libs-kde ia32-libs-sdl
lance@computer /opt/Phoenix_Firestorm-Release_i686_4.0.1.27000 $

Does anyone know how I can fix this problem? Does anyone know what the problem is?

Seems there' s some buggy issue for you with GTK ( perhaps it' s themes) or QT compatibility .

Check this link.  Perhaps this will help you.

Thanks for the suggestion Rob. I tried what that page suggested but when I do a ./firestorm I still get "window creation error". However, one part of the error message states:

It mentioned requiring the screen to be set at 32-bit colour depth. I thus checked my xonf.org file and it appears that I may be running in 24-bit colour depth mode for my monitor?

The depth at 24 is correct. Have same here.

Only difference I see with my own xorg.conf is that I don' t have the ' Modules'  section with ' load glx'  . I thought that was depricated and could cause trouble but I use NVidia and don' t use ATI.

Perhaps you could comment those lines with # , save it and reload your driver ( log off and use CTRL+E to reload X) to try ?

Wouldn' t know anything else to assist you though. Maybe somebody else can tell what version of Catalyst driver for Linux works with SL best.

 

ETA : You might try the 64-bit Imprudence viewer as well to see if your problem persists.

What is this telling you?  It tells me that when you ./firestorm you are trying to execute firestorm.  If you are executing firestorm and it is not built correctly on your computer then you will spit out errors.  How did you make the leap from your first post to /etc/X11?  I can suggest you RTFM and the README files that come with both your OS and the FS download.

Rob, thanks for the reply. I did some research and came to the same conclusion. Linux uses a maximum of 24-bit colour depth. Windows uses 24-bit colour depth + 8-bit for alpha channels. 

Imprudence 64-bit works smoothly on the system. I also tried commenting the lines but I still get "window creation error". Thank you for trying to help Rob, I do appreciate it.

I am wondering, has anyone gotten Firestom (32-bit) to work on Linux (64-bit) after installing the necessary 32-bit libraries while using the AMD Catalyst 12.3 drivers?

 

Pudge: If you are not familiar with the issue, please refrain from useless comments like read the instruction manual.
