You will get a better responses if you tell us in your post how small of a plot your looking for.  It must be a minimum of 512sqm in size if you want to put in in search, which is important for a business.  512sqm supports 117 prims.  Will this be enough to build a store with enough prims left over for your vendors or merchandise display?

If you are a premium member and don't have a Linden Home, you can purchase land on the mainland.  The first 512sqm would be tier free to you.  Premium membership costs 9.95 a month 22.50 for three months and 72.00us a year.  If you paid for a year membership, it would actually pay you back more than you spend.  A year's tier is going to cost a minimum of 60.00US a year for a 512sqm., add in the 300L a week stipend, or 3600.00L a year at today's exchange rate that is another 14.57 US a year, so between the tier and the stipend and tier, you would receive 74.57US in value for your 72.00US plus you get premium support and a few other benefits, such as access to premium sandboxes.  Obviously this is the cheapest way to go.  However you also need to figure in the cost of placing your land in search which is 30L a month or about 1.75US a year.. But you would still break even.

Not to discourage you, but don't count on making enough in sales in the beginning to pay for your land cost and overhead, let alone make any profit, unless you offer something for sale that is in high demand and you are discovered early on by potential customers.  Just like starting a RL business, you should expect to have to put some money into it yourself at least to start and it may not ever become self supporting depending on the success of your business and overhead costs. You will have other costs other than just the land too.  You will probably have to spend a bit on marketing and a shop.

A lot of people starting up with their own shop begin by renting a small shop unit, or several small shop units.  Think about what it is you are selling and look for sims with shopping areas that might sell good linked products, see if they have units for rent.

Good luck.
