Your viewer may have been damaged during download/installation.  Try doing it again.  This time, however, do it the careful "manual" way, to be sure that any damaged files are deleted completely before new ones are added to them.  Here's how to do it properly >>> http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/How-to-uninstall-and-reinstall-Second-Life/ta-p/1375231

Rolig has pointed you to probably the best solution.

A couple of more things...

Today there are 3 possible SL Viewer versions that you may have installed, depending on how you have your viewer setup. Also, the Mac or Linux versions are likely to have or not have problems that Windows versions have. So, give us viewer and operating system information when asking a tech question like yours. Copy and paste from the viewer's HELP->About... 

To add your info to an existing question use OPTIONS->EDIT. It’s in the upper right of your post.

Also, when ever you see a problem like this, close the viewer, restart the computer, and try again. That often fixes odd behaviors.

If the problem then persists, start looking at a reinstall and the more tedious fixes.
