Hi there!

Here are two knowledge base articles about everything you need to know about buying

http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Buying-Private-Regions/ta-p/700045

land: http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Buying-land/ta-p/700043

In addition, you can find regions for sale by other residents here: http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Regions-for-Sale-Full-Regions/bd-p/RegionsforSaleFullRegions
Which is most often cheaper as the 1000 USD set up fee isn't needed.

First, I suggest doing some background reading:

Then, I very strongly recommend taking Lindal Kidd's class in buying and managing land, offered FREE every Friday evening at 5 SLT in Caledon Oxbridge University in world.  She will give you a good, balanced introduction to the joys and perils of owning land, as well as answering your specific questions about the venture you are about to get into.

Once you've taken those two important steps, you can start doing the same things you would do if you were buying land in RL. Look through the listings in the Land forums here.  Do your own searches with the Search function in your viewer.  Buying land from another resident is cheaper than buying from Linden Lab, generally, but in the end what really counts is whether you have a plan for paying monthly maintenance fees.  Unless you are going to subsidize your land by using your RL resources, you should have a good business model that will give you enough SL income to keep paying the monthly land fees.
