This is happening to a number of people.  Please uninstall and do a clean reinstall of the previous version.  Instructions here: http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/How-to-uninstall-and-reinstall-Second-Life/ta-p/1375231

If you did not save the previous version's installation file in your Downloads folder, try one of the many third party viewers.

Or you can try this version: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Release_Notes/Second_Life_Release/3.7.20.296355

And add your comments and any unique information you have, especially about your computer system and graphics card, at this link: https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/BUG-7783

That message means that you have a connection problem.  It may be a problem on Linden Lab's end, so see if you can log in to a different region.  If not, then it's probably on your end.

Reboot your router/modem by unplugging them from the power for a few minutes.  Then plug them back in and rstart your computer.  That will clear their RAM and give them a chance to get a better grip on an IP address.

If that doesn't work, you may want to add a new DSN address to whatever your ISPO has provided for you.  The Google DNS servers are a good choice for many people.  Here's how to do that >>> Google Public DNS .

Check to be sure that your firewall and antivirus are allowing your computer to access Second Life.  See http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Using-Second-Life-with-a-firewall/ta-p/1304539

Avoid using a wireless Internet connection.  See http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Wifi-and-satellite-connections/ta-p/1296823
