I find the constant repeating of the "never meant to replace SL" lie, extremely annoying.

Problem is, nobody has an inkling of what it's supposed to be, I've seen at least 3 different official positions on this over the last 4 years.

Links and verifiable links or never happened.

    "Lo Fidelity"...

Our Beloved Leader posed for a PR picture holding a Vomit-Cam geek goggle box,

    Project Stupid

The tidal wave of negative customer reaction to the suggestion that they planned to kill off SL and make everyone pay through the nose to re-upload everything on the new SL-2, and the implied loss of revenue from threatened mass migrations to the freegrids, leaving no SL income to finance the Project Stupid Money Pit, led to the new revised position that "It's a different product aimed at a different market"

Unfortunately, since the exact nature of that "different market" has changed more than once over the last 4 years, and still looks like a lemon, the claim that it "was never meant to replace" is clearly a myth.

I find your constant use of your perceived point of view adjectives extremely annoying.

Your view is extremely skewed by your prejudice against Sansar. I doubt you've spent any time there or have an inkling of a clue what it's supposed to be.  One day I look forward to handing you a plate of your words for dinner.

(This message is intended for LL's orgchart and people who are actually in a position to work on it. Please no deferments or fashion suggestions.)

Being a creator of Maitreya only bento jewelry, I suppose I'm in "a position to work on it."

    Hello,

I am writing this as a concerned citizen of SL for 9 years now. I am seeing a disturbing trend of progression toward a more and more greedy/gacha form of marketing amongst the build community, and as it stands, the current market structure would appear to be unsustainable.

It has been become more and more controversial over the last year or so, that gacha schemes are pushing in the direction of preying upon the same neural pathways as gambling, and this is seen to be manifesting in the Second Life community as a whole.

We have gone from having pretty much no presence of gacha schemes in SL,  to a large percentage of lindens changing hands coming from these machines in a 3 year span of time. As they evolve, the win mechanics are not shared with the public and are manipulated without the payer being informed. At any given moment, the chance for the desired item could be zero, and they would not know it.

Not to mention that SL is a multi-cultural community in which gambling is forbidden in some cultures, and some of those cultures, specifically those of Muslim origin see gacha schemes as gambling. For those people these items are unobtainable except by second hand unregulated gouge sales on the Marketplace.

I do own a line of gacha machines but have yet to use one. Why? Because I don't like the pressure of participating in events. Are gachas evil? Seriously? It's a game you are free to play or ignore. Personally I love shopping the marketplace for the gachas I'd like to have. I've picked up many items for less than the price of one pull. Do I buy the rares there? Of course not. So gachas are a bargain if you have your sense about you. So yes, you can take full advantage (minus rares) of gachas without gambling by making a list of gacha items you want and then finding them for a good price in the marketplace.

As a second point of note, it seems that the hard work of Bento creators, to develop new items for compatible bodies has been reduced down to creators choosing one body to build for, and then pleading lack of time for all others. This results in a lack of fashion support for many bodies, as this results in a feedback loop of creators creating a larger same-y marketshare of body support, and ignoring all others with other bodies. As the market then becomes more homogenous, creativity, and uniqueness of avatar appearances go by the wayside.

Up until the release of bento I made jewelry for both Slink and Maitreya hands and feet. I made the choice, yes, it's my choice, to update some of my inventory to bento for Maitreya and decided not to update for Slink. Why? Because 80 to 85% of my sales come from the jewelry I make for Maitreya. It's not worth my time to update for Slink and I certainly have no desire to start making jewelry for any other body.

    THIS ESPECIALLY AFFECTS ETHNIC AVATARS.

Please, someone within the regulatory body of SL, look into this. I'm not sure what the solution is. But you have to make it so everyone can still enjoy SL.

Linden Lab did this a long time ago. It's called a system body. Don't like what's available for your mesh body, then switch to a body that is more widely supported or go back to system. Or do like I've done my whole life in SL. I made stockings and pantyhose because I couldn't find any I liked. Did I go complaining to the creators? No, I got my butt up and learned how to make what I wanted. I made toe rings for my very first pair of Slink feet because I couldn't find any. Again, I didn't go demanding that SL jewelers create something because I wanted it and it wasn't available. And that is the story of my creator life here in SL. If I want something and it's not available I either learn how to make it myself or go without. In the end, creating those things I couldn't find has paid for my SL for years, paid for my last three computers and so forth.

Self-reliance is a virtue, whining and pointing fingers because you're not getting your way is annoying.

I see all of these MAITREYA EXCLUSIVE events popping up, and it's making it impossible for me to find new things to wear. This is only the middle stage of this homogenization, and it will continue to advance until there is little variety in body choice in SL. (Yes I own a Maitreya body. No, I do not want to look like you.)

    Thank you for your consideration.

The newest one I know is that Sansar was going to replace SL.

I still hear this. Sansar was never meant to replace SL. That's like saying a restaurant that sells broiled chicken and adds fried chicken to the menu is going to no longer have customers ordering the broiled chicken. That's silly!

  5. There is a rather extreme work around for those using bodies other than the Slink and Gianni. This might be viable for photography. The work around is to wear 2 copies of the body and alpha out all by one arm on one and only alpha the arm on the other. Apply the two different tats to each body separately and then wear the two bodies at the same time. You're doubling your body geometry by doing so and why I say it's an extreme work around.

LL said that moving SL to the cloud could allow them to offer new/different ways to have land. (Paraphrased) The statement was vague. It's likely to be a few years before they can move SL to the cloud, so I wouldn't worry about it yet.

If you have the patience to watch the whole video, great, if not speed through to the last few minutes where she sums up her talk. It sounds like this project is on the fast track.

I am judging from what the Lindens say its going to be

Experience owners can decide what you can wear strike one

Experience owners are given that control so that those who want to create games or RP events can create the best environment for the purpose of the experience. This does not mean you won't have freedom to choose in all experiences.

Multiple instances of an experience strike 2

Depends on the purpose of the experience. This could be quite handy in some circumstances.

Experiences that you havent been too take an age to download strike 3

I rather enjoy landing in an experience with no lag and no grayed out textures because everything is fully loaded before I arrive. I plan for long load times, which for me really isn't all that long actually. The longest it's ever taken is around 5 or 6 minutes. I simply load the experience earlier in the day while doing something else. It might take some planning if you really can't stand to wait 5 minutes for a very complicated experience to load. Most times I don't wait more than a minute or two for an experience to load.

    No adult content strike 4

No easily customisable user housing strike 5

That is before even you get into I have to buy a whole new inventory. Linden labs basically dont understand SL in my opinion and Sansar is SL with all the things taken out that makes SL a place worth coming too.

This is the basis of all your argument  .. Sansar isn't SL .. isn't supposed to be SL .. don't expect what you like about SL to be found in Sansar.

If I want experiences I can get those custom made from steam or the rift store, same with games. They are already better than anything Sansar can offer.

Let me turn it round and ask you what Sansar can offer in your opinion to get me to come hang out there like I do in SL

Sansar is still in creator beta .. it is far far from the point of what it will be. Again, I think you are judging it prematurely.

I wouldn't expect too much from Sansar frankly. I have a powerful computer, have a vr headset and touch controllers. I like vr. Should be a perfect customer ....just one thing nothing about Sansar that I have seen so far remotely wants me to spend a second there. I really cannot see any reason for any of us consumers to want to go there if I am honest. Yes it may be great for creators to use but if consumers don't come who are you going to sell to?

I remember the same kind of nay saying going on about SL during it's beta phase, and yet, 14 years later we are still here. Sansar is still very much in its infancy. It would be silly to judge a cake while it's still batter in a bowl. You can't possibly know what it will taste like until it's fully baked.

With regards to the Catwa head, I feel compelled to bring up how excessively resource intensive their bento heads are. If LL does indeed push to discourage unoptimized content Catwa may find themselves needing to put out an optimization update (which would be extremely simple for them to do) or people using the head may end of jelly dolls to anyone who values their framerates. Here's hoping it's the former.

My catwa head is 8318 complexity with Script info: 'neck:0': [5/5] running scripts, 320 KB allowed memory size limit, 0.014085 ms of CPU time consumed. Hardly seems  excessively resource intensive to me.

  11. 29 minutes ago, Penny Patton said:

This isn't true, unless people using mesh bodies intend to ditch materials altogether.

LL decided not to support materials with the baked textures project. This means your skin materials will be applied to your clothing, unless we continue to use a separate body layer for clothing. This also means that people will not be able to use materials for baked clothing. Granted, very few people do as it is, but it makes layer clothing look far, far better, taking away the ability to use materials with such clothes is a step backward.

Another issue LL ignored is that some avatar layers require blended alpha, some require masked alpha. Forcing everything from tattoos to clothing into a single texture layer is going to cause problems.

I foresee mesh avatars possibly using one or two fewer layers, possibly not changing at all as they discover these issues for themselves.

I also foresee that the clothing layer will remain since it doesn't follow the body contour of the mesh as the tattoo layer and the underwear layers do. Alpha glitching is solved with baked textures so the need for masking shouldn't be an issue. You can see this for yourself now when using multiple tats and clothing layers on a system avatar. It doesn't cause issues.

Right. And I seriously can´t share anyone´s enthusiasm regarding the default Sansar avatar. It´s not what I´d call something ...umm...attractive. Looks more like "Girl/Boy next door", while the customisable features are extremely crippled, due to the oversimplification of the UI. In the end content creators will drop in and do the same thing as they did in SL, and another mess regarding borked general accessibility/usability/"laggabiliy" (what Penny rightly complains on) will emerge. Oh, this just in case this mostly dead Sansar thing will ever take off enough to meet at least a handful of people, ocasionally, to show off the amaziing work of sculptured arts. WIthout wearing goggles.

Apparently the "Avatar" is one of the most important assets in virtual environments, for what reason ever, and absolutely worth the discussion. But...in the end it´s only one out of many important assets. For dressing your avi up and down you do not need a virtual world. Or, let´s say, the very few who enjoy "avatar narcism" won´t be enough by the numbers to pay for a complete virtual world. Barbie is a too strong competitor there, and numerous android apps cover this market adequately.

We have not even seen the default avatar for Sansar yet! It will be revealed with the Fashion release which is scheduled for the middle of December. The current avatar being used in Sansar is a placeholder avatar only much like the prim avatars SL had during it's alpha stage. So we'll see what it looks like next month. I'm hopeful!!!

Reading this thread it seems obvious that some people still think Sansar is SL MK II.

Seriously, Sansar can never be Second Life, its totally not set up that way.

Pretty individual experiences can not be a replacement or substitute for Second Life.

Never meant to imply that Sansar is SL II! It most certainly is not. But that said, just because it isn't doesn't mean I can't fully embrace and enjoy what Sansar is. For a creator it is wonderful. It also allows me to create without having to pay anything up front for upload fees and land purchases. The texturing and lighting is so far superior to SL that SL seems flat in comparison. But that said, doesn't mean I'd jump ship and go to Sansar exclusively. Both worlds have things to offer that the other does not. I enjoy both equally.

I don't see what getting an avi from Sansar has to do with providing a quality avatar to, for example, new SL residents.

I'm sure new residents would love fully furnished homes on beautifully landscaped lands .. does that mean that LL owes that to them? No. There are beautifully made mesh avatars available for purchase. LL should not be competing with any of the merchants in SL .. that includes mesh body creators. Of course this is MY OPINION. The time for Linden Lab to have improved the system body was before the mesh body market began!

  13. I have avatars in both Sansar and Second Life and create for both. I am very optimistic in regards to the fashion release coming to Sansar at the end of December. So yes, this is where I expect to get a first rate avatar from Linden Lab.  I'm also excited for the implementation of cloth physics and the ability to wear a mesh skirt that will flow around my legs. Finally, I can have a pencil skirt without the necessity of using alphas.

And yes, Qie was dead on, this is what I meant.

14 minutes ago, Qie Niangao said:

But that's not exactly what she said:

I think Blush is a bit optimistic about the avatar prospects in Sansar, but I don't see her saying that any change in SL will drive her to Sansar. Rather, I read her to say that Sansar will come with a high-falutin' new avatar from the Lab, and that's where she'll expect to get one, not in SL.

  14. 33 minutes ago, Pamela Galli said:

Disclaimer: The only part of my avatar that is mesh are the feet -- I have never cared enough about how my avi looks to learn how to create one out of mesh parts. I just know that the current complicated, fractured avatar and mesh clothing market is inconvenient, and for new accounts, an almost insurmountable obstacle.

Ahh .. My avatar is mesh from head to toe. I enjoy making mesh content for the Maitreya and Slink bodies. I agree that the system body, from head to toe, is horrid as it is today.

I can understand the desire to have Linden Lab fix the current system body. I just think it's not going to happen. It certainly wouldn't fix the problem with creators having to make so many sizes as it would only add another size to their already long list of sizes.

I know I wouldn't give up my Maitreya body for a new system body even if it was done really well. Learning how to navigate through the maze of mesh body products isn't as difficult as one might think. There are many groups out there that are more than happy to help those just jumping into mesh.

  15. 1 hour ago, Pamela Galli said:

If you are happy with your current mesh body, why would others using a LL default mesh body send you to Sansar? Why do you care what others want, as long as you have what you want? This POV seems a case of just wanting to restrict others choices, for no reason I can see.

I think you misread my post. I don't care if others want to use the current system body or use one of the many mesh bodies available. I just think the notion that Linden Lab would at this point make a new system body is futile. I am however excited about the new avatars and the cloth physics for clothing that Sansar will have available very soon. I enjoy both Second Life and Sansar. I'm more excited about collecting a new wardrobe for my Sansar avatar rather than starting over in SL with a new system body that would require my purchasing a whole new wardrobe.

  16. I am happy with my mesh body and all the clothing I have collected for it thus far. If I want a new system body from Linden Lab for which I will have to collect new clothing all over again, I will go to Sansar. In fact, I'm quite excited to do just that. I have no desire to turn the current body/clothing market in SL upside down with an ill advised creation of a new system body. The time to do that would have been years ago when rigged mesh was first introduced to the grid. We've gone way too far past that to even consider it now.

The present system avatar is also mesh. It is single mesh, not the onion structure the imported mesh bodies are. The system body has a system what is called layers. These layers are not physical layers on the body, they just define what textures go on top of each other. We put our clothing, tattoos, etc. on the layers. Then the baking system bakes the all the different textures into one single texture.

The new improved system body would work exactly the same way in layering as the present system body.
Thus it would not have the same problem as the imported mesh bodies have with their onion layering system and multiple scripts.

When LL completes the baked textures for mesh project, the onion layers of the current mesh bodies will no longer be necessary. The new system will bake the layers and apply to the mesh bodies much the same as it does for system bodies now. This is the best answer to the question of whether LL should make a new system body. That question was put to rest with the implementation of fitted mesh.
