For ordinary wear, I like styles that would be appropriate for a mature woman in RL. When I want to scare off the SL creeps, this is the one I wear:

When I started in SL, my graphics card was just below the minimum requirement. My graphics were so slow that I fell off lots of cliffs and I dreaded circular stairs. I also thought my face looked "muddy" so used facelights to try to improve appearance. When I got a PC with better graphics, all these problems disappeared.

Lots of SL hair is unisex - a style that looks good on a male or female avatar. Some of my FAV short hair styles were made for male avatars - I have to stretch them (shrinking) so they look cute.

A big benefit of normal-sized avatars is that couple's animations line up better.
