Nothing is 100%, but it is unlikely you'll have problems if you:
1. use strong passwords
2. don't reuse the same password across multiple sites
3. don't give them out
4. don't click on links you get in emails and enter your password there (see #3)
5. install antivirus/malware scanner on your device
If you aren't doing the last one even 2FA will not save you.

Second Life does have a steep learning curve though. Not everything is so straight forward and obvious to a new comer. I can understand why some people who are new might ask for help.
I think all of us have helped newbies with specific things from time to time. But it's more productive if they have some idea what the platform is and why they are here

"Can you show me how to play this game?"
No context.. just that.

SL is more known for nutty people. Twitter has rude people. Be sure you are in the right mood for the right platform and all will be well.

AshaShanti,
I was weirded out when a friend described to me her forays into this sort of play. But from the way she described it, it wasn't about cruelty or pain but mainly about being close to another person in a very.. er.. intimate way. I don't pretend to understand it well, I'd just say each person gets something different from that sort of play, and it's not all monstrous or evil. Actually, it's not a far step from vampire rp, when you think about it. SL's been dripping with vampires for years.Anyway, it's not my cup of tea either but I wouldn't get too worried about it.

Hm... unless builders build something for their eyes only, creating is in fact a social activity too - the point is usually to share their creations in some fashion, no?

Yep, sure have. It's not easy when someone just goes poof without a word, but eventually you learn to think of the good times shared, and move on. There are always new friends to make
edited to add: just realised how old the original post was.. heh

I agree, and I look forward to seeing the "new world" and what we can do there.
As a consumer, if some of my existing stuff transfers, I'll be all the happier, but if not, it won't put me off. Heck, I've bought the same stuff twice in SL too..

I'm very happy with this one. I happened to get it on sale but it's still reasonable.
