    (1) laughed and seemed surprised SL was still around when approached with the offer of becoming CEO and (2) pretty much states that when he took a look at SL and saw  "it was a company that was ready made to do a whole bunch of other products, which I wanted to do,” it's not in the realm of tinfoil hats that SL may be ditched at worst, nor the reason SL issues are being put on the backburner at best.

    These are just off handed comments Rod made in an interview. They should not be taken seriously, literally or any other way.

    I posted a link a few pages back to a comment Rod made on a blog post recently.

    http://modemworld.wordpress.com/2012/10/14/rod-humble-talks-up-new-products-creativity-and-second-life/#comment-11199

    From the 16th Oct

    "Rod says - Hey thanks for the write up. For sure our commitment to Second Life remains key and central to our company. When I talk about shared creative spaces I put virtual worlds right in that.

    My comment about also investing in virtual worlds is correct. As you know I don't like to detail things until we are close to something actionable, but we absolutely are investing in the large virtual world space which I think will make Second Life users, business owners and developers very happy…. but its a ways off "

    So based on this off handed comment that Rod made, do you now think SL has a bright and rosy future?

    The only people that really know if SL is in serious trouble or close to going under are the people with access to all the facts i.e. the management of the company. Anyone else who chooses to make predictions without knowing all the facts is destined to get it wrong, as many have done so before you. Sure you may be the lucky one that predicts correctly this time, but chances are you won't, chances are you will just help add fuel to the negativity that surrounds SL and help perpetuate the idea that the platform is in dire straits or on the verge of closing. Such rumours and speculation does nothing to improve customer retention or ease the concerns of those residents looking to invest money into the world be it through membership, tier/land purchase or buying content.

  2. Still no set date for the termination of MB's so I shall continue to ignore the whole DD migration nightmare that awaits me. It's good that CTL are communicating with the merchant community as a whole rather than just the few of us that use this forum.

    When I read the title of this thread I automatically assumed Pam was being sarcastic. My bad :matte-motes-sunglasses-1:

    As you all think me a nut you are safe, but should that change then that is a different story, your logic is flawed.

    It's tricky, I don't think you are a nut, in that you are mentally unstable, I think you are very intelligent. However I think your brain is wired in such a way so that it does not function in the way that society would deem "normal". This is called conspiratorial cognition and it manifests itself in the following 4 traits:

    • patternicity, or a tendency to find meaningful patterns in random noise;
    • agenticity, or the bent to believe the world is controlled by invisible intentional agent;
    • confirmation bias, or the seeking and finding of confirmatory evidence for what we already believe;
    • hindsight bias, or tailoring after-the-fact explanations to what we already know happened.

    Everybody displays these traits to some degree, however those who display these traits strongly are allot more likely to be embroiled in one or more conspiracy theory that overtakes them to the point that it dictates the way they choose to live their lives.

    The more elaborate a conspiracy theory is, and the more people that would need to be involved, the less likely it is true

    If we are a short lived slave race here only to mine gold, then our masters will regularly collect it up with regular wars between us and feed us false science so we never discover the real truth, including wiping most of us out to destroy our knowledge base should we get to close to discovering the truth.

    You say that we will be wiped out should we get too close to the truth? Yet you and others like you have been spreading this alleged "truth" around for years, so surely we should have been wiped out by now as we are passed being "close" to the truth, we know the truth....you have already told us. By using your logic, the only reason we have not been wiped out yet is because we have not become close to knowing the truth. Which means that things you have been telling us can not be true, if they were true then we would have been wiped out.

  5. We should not believe a word of what Oskar Linden said in that statement. He just got fired. He is not an idiot, he is not going to go onto a public forum and reveal the real reasons as to why his employment was so suddenly terminated. That is something that future employers could read and it could jeopardise his chances of getting another job, plus it is none of our business. Nope, he did exactly what he should of done, he came up with a couple of vague unverifiable reasons that didn't really make sense, portraying himself as the victim in the whole scenario. It is exactly what I would have done in his position.

    Best of Luck Oskar!

    I realize I'm sounding like a broken record but, especially after reading the interview with Rod, I honestly think LL is just minimally keeping SL alive until the other games get off the ground.  I truly hope I'm wrong about this...but it does explain a lot.

    This just sounds like the same old doom and gloom prophesying that has been a part of these forums for as long they have existed. Not a year has gone by in SL where people have not come onto these forums listing all of the reasons why the grid is about to fail and predicting SL's imminent demise.

    I remember when Kingdon was fired along with a third of LL's workforce. These forums were rife the self appointed experts predicting SL and LL's downfall, yet here we still are, repeating the same old conversations over and over again.

    I think it's best to just wait and see.

    How much do you think we need to raise?
    , a very respected member of the community who works on such systems in RL put the cost, as a ball-park figure, in the range of a quarter to half a million dollars.

    Don't go listening to those noobs over at SLU, they talk nonsense. We can just get Darrius to do it all, I've heard he would do anything for 6 pack of bud and a cheeky cuddle :matte-motes-big-grin:

    Yes but Building Components did not include Houses, as I recall.

    If my memory serves me right it used to be

    Building components ---> structures ----> Residential structures

                                                                Commercial Structures

                                                                Multipurpose Structures

                                                                Other Structures

    I couldn't see any screenshots of the old subcatagories though so I could be wrong :matte-motes-big-grin-evil:

    .......Time will tell, but IMHO, the direction changes we are seeing are the preliminary shouts of an ultimately fatal course change for LL. It would be an even greater shame if the death of SL is caused not by the failure of the platform itself, but because the company branched out to ensure survival .. and instead fell on its face.

    Good post Darrius.

    I saw this on some blog I was reading the other day which made me feel slightly more hopeful for the future of SL or at least SL v2.

  10. One of my prefab brands does not contain any mesh content and sales have not faltered in any way since mesh went live on the main grid. People are still happy to buy content made from sculpts and prims. In my experience, if something looks good enough then people in SL will buy it regardless of the tools and components used to create it. I find people care about how things look, about functionality, about the LI, about the price and about the after-sales support. Tick all those boxes and the majority will not care if an item is mesh or not.

    I would like to mention to the Commerce Team, that Houses, and Homes, are NOT Building Components.

    Every time I see it, I am forced to question the logic, reasoning, and motivation.

    These were the categories that were set up when SL exchange was launched, so it was not actually LL's decision to name these categories. However in the nearly 4 years that LL's have owned the website they have failed to update the buildings categories to something that actually makes sense. I bet this would be a few hours work at most.

    I've made and sold all sorts of things for the past 5 years: clothing, buildings, scripted tools, .....  I am more proud of some creations than others,  and I'm always disappointed when one of my favorites doesn't seem to catch on.

    Same here, Rolig, re: disappointed when one of my favorites doesn't sell that much.  I have been amazed over the years to watch what sells and what doesn't.  Builds that I personally love sell here and there.  Go figure.

    I find that my best work, the stuff I like the most is kind of odd and whacky when compared to my competitors and not really mainstream. When you work in a niche it's kinda hard to predict mainstream popularity. I suppose based on that assumption I should have anticipated that a generic looking item like a toilet would outsell my more creative designs. That realisation does not stop it being annoying though :matte-motes-big-grin-evil:

    Well I am from the side who are against the NWO...but no need to discuss this at all.

    As I said at the beginning everyone it´s own opinion.:0)

    Well there is substantial evidence out there to prove the existence of the NWO, but to date there is no evidence to support the theory that they used HAARP to control hurricane Sandy, how could there be, it only just happened. I guess evidence could come to light in the future to connect the NWO to this particular disaster as was the case with 9/11 for example, but until such evidence does come to light and it is verified by multiple independent investigators (as was the case with 911) then the NWO involvement and the use of HAARP is just conjecture.

    As you say though you are entitled to your opinion :matte-motes-big-grin:

  14. I've kept sales records for all my business Av's since I started trading in June 2005. Over the years all that data has gone into a database. So I ran a report today, out of interest, to find out what item had sold the most copies in my time trading here. Having released hundreds of prefab houses, thousands of landscaping items and textures plus lots of other random content I felt really let down when I discovered that my best selling item is a Toilet!

    7 and a half years of working in SL and I will be best remembered for a toilet...and it's not even a very good toilet.

    So I was wondering what other people's best selling product was/is. By this I mean the quantity sold, not the value earned. Freebies not included.

    I guess you know that answer anyway don´t you?

    Not at all, that's why I am asking.

    According to Google it could be anything from Gods revenge on the gays, to being engineered by Obama to win an election to fulfilling a prophecy that Aliens gave to Whitley Strieber years ago to being punishment on America for dividing Israel.

    I was just wondering which camp you were pitching your tent in?
