Personally, I would like to see more focus on getting the newbies logged into a web based viewer. This would give them an easy way to invite their friends, and solve many compatibility issues with machines. Once those newbs get comfortable in SL, then they can download the SL viewer.

That would be a good idea.....i thought they were developing one about a year ago?

  2. ....and just importantly how much Income will it add to the LL pot..

They''ve bought other businesses in the past and either shut it down (OnRez) or became a flop (Avatars United).

It seems like MySecondlife.com is a spin off Avatars United i.e can message can interact and share experiences by sending messages, blogging, discussing topics, uploading photos and videos. Wikipedia states "Linden Lab closed Avatars United in September 2010, integrating the underlying social technology into Second Life"

Likewise with Marketplace...it's not innovative, it's just a spin off from IMVU's "Catalog" shopping site.

  3. Games are going to be the next big thing for SL....after Breedables.

Game developers should flourish as well as being highly profitable. Good scripting, website support and coding are key......as well as creating something that will appeal to the masses.

A couple years back, when M.Linden was pondering over a 70-sim Arts continent....i thought it would be a good idea do create one for Games. I also thought there should be a Museum type continent....of the best (ex) Sims that SL had......a kind of showcase and part of Newbie's initial tour...along with the Arts & Gaming Continents...in the hope that it would boost retention rates.

that the question i think. where is the gold in SL today? tangible gold that can be turned into money for the residents. linden got their gold, so where is ours?

am not suggesting another goldrush. just asking where is the wealth that will help us to pay the tier

The Goldrush in SL right now are BREEDABLES......the creators of Meeroos and Amaretto Horses would have made a Million in sales.

Future goldrushes? Maybe Gridwide games...again really for the creators of those. Have you seen the gridwide Byngo?.....every entry stake, the creators get 10% - 96 games per day (every 15 mins) about 100 entrants per game. Entry stakes from 25 L to a 1000 L....work it out!

  5. The majority of Third Party Viewers will display the Search button prominently as it should be. LL are using the new OS Lucene Search engine....less gameable, more flexibility to LL and the results are as they should be. (not 100% perfect but better than GSA engine)

You can test it by typing out "Hair" with PG+ Mature settings......18 out of the 20 results returned on the 1st page are valid and in some cases well known Hair shops.

With the official LL SL Viewers , the prominent "Search" button is replaced by a "Looking Glass icon".....and Marketplace shopping Cart titled "Shop" and placed right next to your L$ Balance and BUY L$ buttons. Even if you use the Search facility...it's a jamboree and not straightforward layout like the 1.23 Viewers i.e All Search, Classifieds, Events, Showcase,Land, People, Groups  & Places (by traffic units) buttons aligned next to each other.

As Linden Lab are the modern day Scrooge when it comes to Marketing & Advertising budgets....the only feasible option is fro them to develop other products and hope that they are a success...and generate a lot of Income for them. Maybe some game aps for phones or something......or a Facebook game.

  6. Not sure if Enhancements are worthwhile or not.....i would imagine the results vary in different sectors. I could see them being beneficial in small niche sectors by using "by Category Landing page" Enhancement

I found an interesting article today regarding in-world "Classifieds".....it's a bit dated and most likely the results would be worst now...given the SL Viewer changes. It's regarding those expensive top-8 Classifieds In-world

And that's it as far as i can see. There never has been any vision at all except making money out of it which they do,
about 70 million a year or so
. Certainly they can afford the world's most expensive surf board now LOL.

Try around $10-15 Mill Usd Net Profit and you'd be nearer the mark.  Tier Income alone is around $70-75 Mill a year (Main source of income), how can they have net profits of $70 mill?

I say someone needs to build another marketplace and work with the 3rd party viewers and offer the creators of the TPV viewers to encorporate a Marketplace in their viewers other than SL marketplace and swoop in on their proffits just as they have done us. Free market deserves a shot in the ass

The TPV viewers can split the sales proffits while the market place creator can capitolize on the ads

    It can be done..

    Stick it to the man
    :)

it had been done a couple years back....Slapt.me, Apez and a couple of others. They've all since shut down.

If the TPV viewers did that (which i would support)....it wouldn't be long until LL find a way of choking off TPV Viewers from logging in.

Again you answered you own statement...
    .Traffic Bots!
How many Bots?...10k, 20k or more.?  That's why i take the concurrency before the Traffic Bots ban with a pinch of salt. In reality 2008 concurrency might have only been slightly higher than Jan 2010.

Um no, I didn't answer my own statement and neither did you. We don't know how many were bots and how many were people no matter how eager you are to jump to conclusions. We're never going to be able to answer that question definitively one way or the other. I doubt the answer will be as simple and one sided as you seem to make it out to be tho.

.....and that is why I stated that i take concurrency figures before the Traffic Bots ban with a pinch of salt. As we don't  how many of those 80-90k were actually Bots. I've read suggestions on blogs, anything from 10k to as many as 30k......but those are just guesstimates too.

My jumping to conclusion.....is that concurrency figures before the TB ban were unreliable, most people would be in agreement!

"If it i had to make a stab at it though....I would say LL's profit margins hover between 10 -15% (15% is very optimistic on my part).....so on $100 Mill revenues.....we're looking at Net Profits before CT Tax around $10-15 Mill.usd"

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is in line with my own ballpark calculations:
US$10 million before tax on US$100 million in sales.

    Cutting the price of tier
    would
    increase sales,
    but
    the problem runs deeper.

    .....................

Linden Lab is stuck in an engineering mentality. It doesn't see the
    New Economy
    and
    New Society
    of virtual worlds.

    That
    is the
    real
    problem.

Hey there Deltango.....so you took a stab at number crunching too?

Glad we're on the same page! :)

Marketplace has to die, or SL will.

Or at least change, and be tied to land ownership -more- rather than the less of... 0... that is coming soon.

lol, i like that quote as i'm not a fan of Marketplace and what it's done to the In-world economy!

I wouldn't suggest "die" though.....maybe take a backward seat, like how the old Onrez, SLEX and XStreet shopping websites use to compliment In-world commercial activities.

They can start by removing the "shopping Cart" button from their Official SL Viewers...so that users who wanted to shop on Marketplace, would have to flick to their browser and purposely open up MP outside of SL. (like it use to be)
