I'm guessing that (hoping that?) those of us that spend a lot of time building are also getting a lot of enjoyment out of it.  That certainly is the case for me and I assume Monalisa (since she builds for herself).

How about Pamela & Porky, is this pleasure mixed with business, so to speak?

Good question, and one I try to analyze sometimes. It really doesn't change anything for me that I do this full time now instead of part time, so I imagine it is the same for me as for anyone else who feels compelled to make things AND feels compelled to be compensated for the time spent doing it (and it is clear to me from the loveliness of your things and your professional approach to your business that you are one of those people).

It's not much different from when I was teaching. I loved it so much, but it was also a lot of hard work and stuff I did not much like doing (even hated having to do), and I was VERY glad that someone was willing to pay me to do what I most wanted to do anyway.

I agree that the current relevancy search is terrible, but relevancy just based on revenue won't really work either - old products would always do better this way and new products would be buried easily due to obvious lack of revenue.

I don't know what magic formula was used back on Xstreet, but relevancy was so much more relevant back then. They must have used a mix of number of sales, total revenue, ratings..., and the outcome was rather good in most cases. Plus freebies / cheapies were automatically put in a separate category, now there's freebies everywhere.

My own sales are absolutely awful right now, they haven't been that low for a very long time. My prices are fair and already lower than they should be - and I simply refuse to play the "sell for close to nothing promo" game. This practice has been worrying me for quite some time and it only seems to be getting worse. Unfortunately merchants don't realize that they will kill the economy in the end this way, and it's already hurting. I'd rather make sure there's a stable future for SL than take part in the  "grab whatever I can within a month mentality ". Sadly there are more than enough merchants who fail to look at the bigger picture and the future of SL's economy.

The change in customer behavior is also obvious - this week alone I had two people begging for free items and one who asked for a discount - for items that aren't even 2 U$ and that took me about a week to finish. All these close to nothing items on the Marketplace really seem to blur customers understanding of the time, effort and expenses it takes to keep running a business, creating quality content and providing support.

The marketplace is only strengthening that kind of behavior, with all the cheap items taking up the top spots so easily.

A new relevancy filter is absolutely needed, I just think it has to consist of more than just revenue.

I certainly agree about Xstreet relevance -- I guess LL lost the recipe for that. Too bad.

They have fiddled with it a bit because it used to be exactly the same as Best Selling. I suspect Forni is right and stars + sales = relevancy.

  3. My houses don't come up with a search by either Relevance or Best Selling.  The one with the most sales is the least expensive one, and it is on p. 3 or 4.

Your houses and mine (and others) are for the discriminating, the ones who want real quality -- and will take some time to find it. They are not going to buy a 200-300L house from the first few pages of the MP. They just aren't. It would be nice to make it easier for people to find top quality, but LL seems intent on promoting something else.

Those who are selling their houses for about a buck probably do well with that pricing model -- as long as not too many others do the same. The thing is, more and more are doing exactly that, so the prices of average houses are being driven down. Prices of top quality houses are not -- at least so far. If they are driven down, then they will just stop being made. I am certainly not going to spend the time I do on my houses and sell them for a dollar apiece, and I don't care how many I could sell. I won't do it. And if the prices of top quality items are driven down, then average quality items will be worth even less than they are now.

  4. Thanks all -- these things all appear in the list as General, so no clue.

There are two categories: First, stuff that just mysteriously was deactivated. They never had a maturity rating change. And all of them were selling pretty well. But not in a while, I realize.

The others were listed at one time and now just give the option to "Create" -- create a whole new listing from scratch.

Grrrr. This is going to take hours to fix. And it can all be deactivated any time.

  5. What have they done now? I went to get a link for a customer and the item was not there -- then discovered not only that a bunch of things -- rated General -- had been delisted but now I cannot list them. I click "list" and it does not take.

Anyone else noticed this?  I have no idea how long it has been like this, but imagine it has cost quite a few sales.

Yeah, kudos to them, definitely can be alot of work. Although i see the value, I would fear moving anything because I'd be afraid of forgetting to change the LM. Plus, I think my store and sections are labeled and organized quite well to find what you are looking for fast, or you can walk around and browse. Some people really do need to do things like custom LMs for every product, as things are spread out so much. Heck, maybe I could do the LMs by category. That way, the customer would not be more than 10 meters from the product. That's an idea.

I would rather have a LM to a teleport board so I could choose where I wanted to go when I got there, not where something is that I already bought. In any case, in my opinion the time spent doing that would be more productively spent on updating or creating new products -- even if you do have help, which most don't.  I recently hired a RL friend to help me in the store, and I would never want her to spend her time on something of dubious value like that.

What I do when I update my store teleport HUD is send it to my group members, so they can teleport from home directly to whatever department they are interested in. It's like a bunch of wearable LMs in one.  It did take quite a bit of time to make it but well worth it in terms of value to the customer.

  7. I agree that there is much that can be done to make it easier to leave reviews, all that you mentioned. Before, reviews and ratings were rare enough, but now less than one in 100.

Still I prefer the actual reviews to stars. Anyone can leave one star for any reason, and there is nothing you can do about it. Now, if they leave one star because something did not get delivered, you can get it removed.

  8. Agree with all -- most of the discussion after the meeting among those who stayed around (or were in the inworld group) was about this, and most said the same thing. Our avis do not need to be present and the information does not have to be in real time (tho I admit I do like seeing my merchant friends there).

We have this new forum which from looking at the video demo looks like it can very easily be adapted to the purpose.

  9. Since I have three sims (and yes use all the prims) it is easy to get lost, but I do have a teleport map and HUD with departments clearly marked. Ppl have told me these are really helpful -- if they don't use the teleport function of the HUD they can at least use the map to know which direction to fly.

My whole store is flyable -- you can pretty much fly up from wherever you are.

Toy's thread about the Round Store idea previously discusssed in the Roundtable is one I have been giving some thought to, as well.

Regarding large open stores -- it depends on what you sell. I have tons of textures so I have to put up walls at the landing point to block the viewer, or everyone would crash on landing. So I have mostly vignettes with separating walls in the store itself.

Agree.. the keywords just produce to much funny results in search.

There may be some products out there that require all that space for keywords, but none of mine come anywhere close, and some of mine are extremely feature-rich. One line of carefully chosen keywords should be plenty. That is where the abuse potential comes in. And why titles should have more weight (since there is less space).

  11. Yes, the bold! What is up with that? And make them NOT bold if they are all read! Yes!

And I see you have the same problem with your badge -- the top is repeated at the bottom. I tried several times to get the right size.

  12. What I mean is that it's a lot of black text on white, which is stark, and little separation between threads. I don't see any way to customize it. Maybe some darker alternating colored bands to start with. I don't know what it is but I have been in a lot of forums and something about this one makes it hard to scan threads.

I am almost afraid to ask but: what work did they wipe out this time?

Well, it is all in there somewhere, but they are not in the forum categories. For instance, I've answered, literally, hundreds of things on the SL answers, Animation forum, and some on mesh. These can only be found in the archives now and are not in the actual forum categories anymore. They seems to have moved some, but very few. We are back to square 1 again.

Ahh that work. Yes when they disbanded the original LL forums, I know the RA and scripting ppl who had invested tons of time were devastated. But there is supposed to be some mechanism to make knowledge base docs out of posts or something with this software.
