  1. New people coming to SL have had different aspirations.  When I managed the NCI newbie mall a couple years ago, I was dealing with at least two new creators/sellers per week.  I remember having to re-design the floor to allow for more space. There was even a waiting list. (^_^)

Now, just this past weekend, I closed the mall.  Applications were down to one per month.  And, even then, what few people applied usually didn't even have anything created yet. (._.)

So, yeah, the SL market as a whole has gone past its saturation point and much of what's left is kit or prefab licensed works.  Mind you, that's not a bad thing.  There are people who can make objects but can't texture to save their lives.  There are texture artists who have a tough time wrapping their minds around 3D forms and UV maps.  So the full perms templates and prefab markets do have their place.  (^_^)

Still, I miss all the store updates from the past.  Nowadays I find more stores advertising new discounts on old items than advertising new items. (>_<)

  2. You are not guaranteed privacy of your inworld activities.  Consider, you're online with a global server network.  Assume, if someone can reach you, you WILL be reached. (^_^)

The only way to be sure of privacy is to be on a sim with no neighbouring sims, no public access, and only you and your partner(s) white listed for entry.  Otherwise, consider any and all of your activities to be public to the world. (^_^)

Finally, this is what is described as a "Resident Dispute", which Linden Lab will not participate in according to the TOS. (^_^)

So, you're pretty much S-O-L at this point and take this as a learning opportunity to share your intimate moments in a more concealed fashion. (^_^)y

  3. The limit of 5-per was removed from the TOS a couple years ago but the account creation system still enforces it in odd ways.  I've typically worked around it via multiple Email accounts and have amassed a total of 25 alternate accounts.  In addition, I've logged in 10 accounts at the same time, from the same IP address, and on the same computer... So I know of no inworld enforcement of alternate accounts at any given time. (^_^)

  4. What groups take as donations is your tier.  You would essentially hold no land and your 512sqm tier allowance would be added to the stockpile of the group.  If you ever want your tier back, you can simply take it.  In addition, if you no longer maintain a premium account, your tier will be discontinued and both you and the group would lose it. 5. Win8 probably installed Microsoft's default video driver, which yes, will not work with SL.  This happened back when Win7 came about as well.  Find the manufacturer of your graphics chip and download their latest drivers.  Things should be fine from there on out.  (^_^)

If that doesn't work out, consider one of the third party viewers.  I have personally found a lot of stability in Firestorm.  Maybe even the LL beta client could work for you.  If either one does, it may be a good idea to uninstall SL, wipe all left over files, then re-install from scratch. 6. Shamefully, there are a ton of camera position and angle options which aren't in the preferences panel.  My own camera is adjust via two debug settings.  I keep a notecard inworld with the settings.  Next time I'm on, I'll post them here.  (^_^)

I have a custom camera for my avatar height and for tiny/petite avatars. The tiny/petite camera is actually quite amazing in that the low angle and upward tilt makes even the smallest room look like a giant overwhelming space.  The link below is an example.  (^_^)

  7. My house in the Brown sim is a good example of to-scale building.  The floorplan is a single mesh which was drawn on SolidWorks and converted via Blender.  So, its 1:1 size is to real world scale.  Though the 10' high ceiling is intentional, it's not due to any camera issues of mine. (^_^)

Really, the default camera position is best disposed of.  It's fine for outdoors and getting a wide view of things, but, it's practically top-down compared to most game cameras. (>_<)

Building to scale is possible and frankly easier than what I'll call 'relative' scale building... Particularly to people who are practiced in the metric system (i.e. the world that isn't America).  Avatar scale is possible and allows for a wider dynamic range of sizes and heights without polygon edges and corners going all crazy.  If it all boils down to the camera... Change the camera. (^_^)

  8. I'm a vocal believer in the SL meter being a meter for multiple reasons.  Primarily, I'm an engineer.  When I rez a prim and I want it to be 5 meters long, I expect to be able to punch in a 5 and be done with it.  So, when I build a house or furniture or what-have-you, I come at it with the same expectations as I would working in SolidWorks or AutoCAD. (^_^)

To that point, the scale of my avatar matters in order to match up with the environment I've created for myself.  I do use a custom "over the shoulder" camera angle which causes my relatively short avatar to fill 80% of the screen and still allow for a full view of what's in front of me. (^_^)

At the same time, it answers the question "How can I be taller than my friends?"  What if someone actually wants to be taller.  Not just tall, but, taller than other people for RP reasons or as a reflection of his real life height?  In a world of giants, there can be no true giant.  That dynamic range is lost.  Everyone's knobs are on 11 and there's no higher to go. (>_<)

In the end, I do see that the commonality of max'd out avatar height and offset building scale being restricting factors to many a great possiblity in SL.  I'm not saying anyone has to actually do anything, but, I will stand against anyone saying I can't. (^_^)y

  9. Good specs.  Quite over-priced, though.  But, it's a lappie, so that's to be expected.  I'd worry about that AMD graphics card, though.  They still screw up on OpenGL standards and you may not be able to run SL at its best settings due to odd glitches and such. (>_<)
