  1. If it's your only choice it should run SL adequately but not with the best possible performance. You may have to turn OpenGL vertex buffer objects off in preferences - AMD/ATI cards have been misbehaving with them turned on in SL. The review I saw of it said it was a midrange card and wasn't the best value for the money. Right now it looks like Nvidia cards are running the latest SL viewers better than ATI/AMD cards.

  2. I just came to a realization that would explain a lot. We think of our SL last names as a combination of letters that can be put together in any combination, but it's very possible that isn't what they actually ARE. It's very possible that they're stored as a comparatively small, fixed number, so, for istance, an old last name like "Song" may be encoded as the binary equivalent of 0117 and "Tennyson", which was one of hte last ones, could be 8563. These numbers would be looked up from a list in the viewer to display the words we're used to seeing as last names. This would explain why Linden Lab doesn't do what would seem to a human (but not a computer) to be the logical thing, which would be to enter our own words as last names. This may be something that the touchy-feely people at Linden Lab (like Rodvik) may not have been aware of themselfves.

If this is the case that value field will eventually run out of room when the value hits the largest possible number that the software allows. This would explain why there was talk of Second Life "running out otf last names" and why it was suggested that accounts would need to be six months old to get a last name, which would amount to rationing. That would mean that the lists of possible new names that people were suggesting to help Linden Lab's "creativity problem" would be useless as useless parts of a boar hog. The problem wouldn't be in the words, it woudl be in the numbers and In order to add more room for last name values everything that involves that data field would need to be changed, and to add true custom last names the change would be enormous.

This makes a lot of sense to me. It would be nice if it were confirmed by someone at Linden Lab, but, well, you know.

  3. Also, almost all vehicles in SL are sold so that the owner can keep them in their inventories and create infinite numbers of copies of them so even if the originals have vanished identical copies of them can probably be placed out when the owner gets around to them.

  4. Lydia -

You are obviously having problems. However, almost none of them can POSSIBLY be connected to being on a release candidate region or on the server code itself. Avatar inventory is kept on servers that are completely separate from the simulation servers. If your inventory isn't simply unmanageably large there may be corruption in it but that's nothing anyone in the simulation server side can take blame for. The memory leaks are in the viewer - it looks to be a problem with the memory management that doesn't release memory when it's no longer needed. I get them too. I can work around it by turning my graphics down. I live on RC Magnum and haven't seen any unusual problems with logging in or teleporting, and Magnum right now has by far the most unusual code for region crossings. The server code on a release channel is only slightly different from the main channel at any given time.  Login and teleport problems are often symptoms of an erratic connection.

You keep announcing that your problems are caused by the RC server rolls when it's exactly as likely that many of them could have been caused by the black cat that crossed your path earlier in the week. It's not getting your problems solved and it's a poor reflection on you.

Got yr point. Yes you are right, maybe I rush a bit!

Btw, can you explain me why I cant wear a demo hair? I select Add or Wear but it doesnt appears on my head. However, when Im editing my appearence under hair section, the demo name is diaplayed there!

The part of your outfit that's LABELED "hair" and is marked with the icon of a brown-haired head is old technology. Originally SL hair could be edited with sliders but looked like a helmet and was replaced by prim- and now mesh hair. The old "hair" item is still worn and required to be there for your avatar to be "complete" but it's only used to control the shape of your eyebrows. The actual "hair" part is usually shrunken down so it's hidden inside your bald head.

  6. First of all, shapes and skins need to work together. I wear a Teen Turf skin that's adorable on the shape it came with that I edited subtly, but if I put on most other shapes I look like the product of six generations of inbreeding. Oh, and very important: ALL NON-"MESH" SHAPES ARE BASED ON THE SAME DEFAULT AND SLIDERS THAT YOU HAVE ACCESS TO WHEN YOU CREATE A NEW SHAPE. What you're paying for if you buy a shape is the skill and taste of the person operating those sliders.

I've pulled together a number of differing avatars and these are my opinions on skins:

CURIO - have remarkable detail but they have a very distinctive look and I find myself looking more at the skin itself than the avatar wearing it. Also some of their skin tones are rather odd.

LAQ - also popular enough to be recognizable as a skin itself. A lot of people like them and I have no problem with the quality but I feel they have a somewhat waxy look and seem too "perfect." They have nice medium skin tones though.

BELLEZA - Very nice skins. I prefer Belleza to Curio and LAQ for that price range and avatar age/look.

REDGRAVE - I feel they have a slightly "older" look than most skins, which seem to be for women in their early twenties. I'd say most Redgrave skins make you look somewhere between 30 and 40 or so. Very high quality, though, and when I put a Redgrave skin on an avatar she seems to become a person somehow. The makeup choices arent' always useful though.

PINK FUEL - GREAT bargain if you're looking to be somewhere between 15 and 20. Some of their $100 skins are every bit as good as $900 skins (and better than the $1400 skins from a place that I won't name but who advertise heavily in the in-world search.)

DUTCH TOUCH - I haven't had the opportunity to use them for an avatar but many of  them are very good for the approximately L$400 - L$600 price range, especially the lighter skin tones.

NATURAL BEAUTY - Becoming my new favorite. They won't knock you out with their detail as they have a somewhat softer look but their newer skin tones have a subtle, mottled quality that's amazingly "alive" when you look at them from an average distance.

  7. If you're renting land on a private estate you may be able to request a larger prim allotment from the sim owner but you may not get it. A sim ("region") has no more than 15000 prims available for everyone on it and they're usually allocated equally by lot size. If the owner gives you more they have to take prims away from another lot. If there were objects placed by the landlord on your lot they may be talked into removing them and freeing up those prims for you.

If you own mainland you can buy another plot IN THE SAME REGION and the prims allocated to that new lot can be used on your old lot. A lot of mainland regions have small chunks of abandoned land available for L$1 per meter. Tier payments go up by doubling the amount of land (and therefore prims) you can use for your payment. 263 is a rather odd number which sounds like you have a little over 1024 square meters. If you already own and pay for more than 1024 square meters of mainland, that means you can buy up to a total of 2048 for the same tier payment. Look for the summary of your land either in the "My Land" menu category or on your dashboard. That will tell you how much you own and how much you can buy. That's only for mainland though.

  8. The avatar may have been wearing an "alpha" which is sort of a cloak of invisibility for part of the body to prevent it from showing through an object attached to it. When you detached the hair you may have seen your bald head covered by an "alpha." Alphas are worn and can be detached like any other clothing and have icons that look like a white T-shirt with criss-cross lines through it.

  9. If everyone in SL uses a third-party viewer to access it then Linden Lab would lose all the income that they make off the viewer.

    Which is... (wait for it...)

    NOTHING.

Since the viewer's given away for free and needs to have some degree of support, it's actually a net liability. Where they make their money is people using the service and "buying" products and land, and what viewer people use doesn't make any difference. Although I'm sure the viewer team at Linden Lab has an ordinary sense of pride in what they do, it would show a complete lack of business sense for them to worry about whether you got your viewer by paying nothing to Linden Lab or by paying nothing to the developers of Phoenix or any other viewer.

What DOES make a difference is the sort of activity that goes on and has to be supported by the servers - and what gets seen by naive media types who wander around trying to find a sensational story.  It's the feature set of Second Life as a whole that Linden Lab wants and needs to maintain control over. If people can change this  by using a viewer that Linden Lab has no control over, THEN that becomes a problem. And that's what I see this whole thing being about.

  10. A landmark is an object like just about anything else in your inventory. You can move or delete them like any other object.

If you see more folders under the "Landmark" tab of your viewer what they would be are other folders in your inventory that also have landmarks in them - it's common for stores to include a landmark to their place in a folder of goods you've bought for them. If they're redundant you can delete them or if you want to consolidate your landmarks you can move them.  You may have to do it from the "Inventory" tab instead of the "Landmark" tab though.

  11. Things that you attach to your avatar are put on certain "attachment points" that correspond to the parts of your body. Your hair was probably on the attachment point labeled "skull." If you saw a message saying "Detach" ---- "Skull" that was SL shorthand for "Detach the thing that was on the "Skull" attachment point." There isn't an actual removable body part on the standard avatar that is called the "skull."

Since invisiprims are broken, I have been replacing a lot of shoes.  I have found very nice pumps, flats, boots, and athletic shoes that work fine.  I am having trouble finding sandals, because the only ones I can find that don't rely on invisiprims have prim feet, which I don't want because I can never get a good color match.

I thought of a solution.  I can't see any reason that it wouldn't work, but would like to know if others think so, too.  The problem I have with the invisiprim shoes is that a terribly deformed rear part of my foot sticks down though the sole of the shoe.  It seems to me that I could make an alpha mask for just the part that needs to be hidden and that it might be the same, and certainly would be similar, for most shoes.

    Does this sound right?

It's possible but it will be a very fussy procedure. When you upload a texture for an alpha it can be difficult to anticipate exactly what the alpha will mask because of how the viewer interprets the texture. I'm working on it now and I'm getting close but there is a lot of trial and error involved. You should be able to ignore the invisiprim when its done.

  13. Go to the "Advanced" menu (key in "Crtl-Alt-D" if you dont' see it) and go to "Performance Tools" and select "Lag Meter" when you're having problems. If the second dot is yellow or red you're having connection problems. If the third is yellow or red the server at Linden Lab is having problems.

Also, if you have a video card from ATI try going into "Preferences" - "Graphics" and de-select the box saying "Use OpenGL Vertex Buffer Objects." This is a setting that's been causing people with ATI cards to have problems lately.

    for some reason..i wish i could get a linden's opinion on the subj,...lol. swear everyone i've talked to keeps saying 5'2, 5'2, 5'2 >.<

Several "adult" places have height detectors that warn visitors who are under 5'-2". That's probably where that number came from. Bear in mind that's the "agent height" which is only measured to about the middle of the head but which also includes shoes - that's the only height measurement that can be determined automatically. It's also the height Linden Lab viewers report in the "Edit My Shape" area, but most third-party viewers use a calculation that attempts to get closer to your actual height by adding inches to allow for the upper part of  your head.

The new guy here again. I'm curious what are prims? I've been looking at potentially buying a second life house, and I've seen the term bounced around here and there...not sure what it is?

Also HUD? No idea what it is, but it seems to be important.

And to answer the second part of your question that got ignored while everyone started wrassling with each other, a HUD ("Heads-Up Display") is an object that attaches to your avatar but can only be seen by you and appears in the view window. It frequently has buttons you can push to control various attachments or other things. A very typical type of HUD is called an "AO" ("animation overrider") which is a scripted object that you can wear that makes your avatar walk, stand and sit in more interesting and realistic ways than the default animations.

  16. Try Ruby Skins. They specialize in skins outside of the ordinary "20 year old model" rut and have a variety of older men's skins. They come with a non-modifiable shape but you can pick up modifiable versions of the shapes pretty cheaply as well.

    Hi

Is there more info on the Threaded Region Crossing Stage 1 Project? Things like what was stage 1 supposed to accomplish along with the overall project goals would aide me in supplying usable feedback

    thanks

These are minutes of a meeting where the changes were discussed. It's pretty technical but it describes some of what they're trying to do.

  18. I fly a seaplane in the Blake Sea area sometimes and very seldom have problems with a simple crossing from one region to another. I find crossings work best when I"m not trying to change speed or direction when crossing the border and when I hit the border more-or-less perpendicularly. Avoid going into the corner of sims when you cross. I have a HUD that shows my position in the sim in simple graphic form and also shows rezzing areas, parcels with ban lines and full parcels along the border of the next sim. It makes a tremendous difference in my ability to fly long distances.

  19. Pamela, I visited your store this morning and didn't notice anything unusual for me as far as performance, including when I crossed from one of your sims to another, and I hadn't been there for almost a year so it should all have been loading new for me instead of from cache.

  20. If you have a system has a power-saving feature that is supposed to automatically switch between graphics processing between the main CPU and the dedicated graphics chip try to make sure SL always uses the dedicated graphics chip.  Never try running SL on pure battery power. Also, under "Preferences" - "Graphics" - "Hardware" switch off "Use OpenGL Vertex Buffer Objects." That setting helps a lot of people with ATI/AMD graphics chips.
