Long ago in a sim far far away I joined up with Second Life for the first time. It is an amazing trip through an ever changing world and a load of fun to boot. However the computer I had then ( and still use now) is only barely able to play SL to the point the choppiness and lag forced me to put SL on the back burner. Well this year I have set aside about $1,000 towards a new laptop. I can give and take on the price and it must be a laptop for spatial reasons and since I am buying something new I would prefer to get the best bang for my buck and hopefully be able to play on high to ultra settings. Any Advice or direct links I should know about?

People who do contract work sometimes tell their clients, "You can have things done cheap, fast or right. Pick any two." You're in the same boat, only substitute "laptop" for "right." With your budget you should be able to buy a laptop that will run SL adequately but probably withoult running shadows, etc.

What operating system are you planning on using? If you're in the Windows family you'll probably end up with Windows 8 on a new laptop, and some people are having issues with it. Look for a Nvidia graphics chip with dedicated graphics memory. (AMD plus dedicated memory can work but Second LIfe on AMD seems like it's always a crapshoot.) Right now I can confidently say you should NOT consider the combination of Intel HD4000 graphics, Windows 8 and Second Life. The drivers from Intel just don't work properly yet. I think you can still downgrade from WIndows 8 to WIndows 7 for free but it's a hassle on a preloaded machine.

  2. Nothing personal, but you remind me of a story I read when I was little about a race of aliens observing Earth who thought cars were the sentient race and humans were a sort of parasite. Everything done in SL is done through a "viewer", which is a separate stand-alone program. There's no need to start a web browser - you can find and store locations within the viewer. There are times when you'll see interesting places on a separate web page, shop on the Marketplace, or look at forums, etc. on this web site but they're completely separate and actually can be done better by calling up a web browser AFTER you log into the VIEWER. You can share one viewer with the other member of your household; you'll just log into separate accounts.

So a meter in SL is exactly the same as a meter in RL.  Hmmmm.  How to test the hypothesis.

To use the standard definition, I would need to build something like an atomic beam.  Sadly no one in SL seems to able to supply the needed isotopes of caesium or rubidium.

Now I really dont care get the 10th decimal place, so simpler methods are available.  I actually used a He-Ne laser to accurately measure the distance between two optical flats once.  Sadly, no listings in world for working lasers.  And you need to use things like invar and zerodur for the cavity, or else thermal stability will be an issue.  Again, I strike out on Market Place.

OK, so maybe I can settle for a simple reference object.  I have a meter stick by my desk, but I can't figure out how to import it into SL.

Sigh.  I guess we have to resort to astronomy.  After all, the original definition was one ten millionth of the distance from the equator to the north pole, and we can easily determine the length of a unit rod by measuring the length of their shadows at local noon on the same day, but at different latitudes.  Back in the day, this required a lot of coordination to get the timing down, but with TP in SL, its dead nuts easy!  We do need to know the diameter of the earth for this, but that's easy enough to Google.

OMG!!  I tried this in different widely separated sims.   The shadow lengths are always the same.  This world is FLAT!   Something is profoundly different about the world of SL.

I'm afraid I have no way of checking to see if a meter in SL is exactly the same as a meter in RL.  Given the size of every objects like furniture, houses, and people, I strongly suspect that there the SL meter is stretched a bit with respect to the RL meter, but  I can think of no way to tell for sure.

Actually, since Second Life approaches we observers at the speed of light, everything in it is infinitely small.

  4. You can only organize your inventory from in-world, but you may be able to do it from a mobile viewer if you don't feel like using a full graphical viewer. I use the existing permanent system folders and have set up my own top-level folders of broad categories that I can drop the subfolders into. For things like clothing, subfolders inside the clothing folder are also useful. While you're tidying, go through things like your notecard and object folders and get rid of things you no longer have use for - they both tend to become "junk drawers." You can also start getting rid of redundant landmarks and notecards in folders from places you've bought several items from.

  5. Most animation makers have in-world stores with pose stands that you can test the AO animations from. For what you want, try looking at Oracul (their sim is called Kuso,) Tuty's and ANA_Mations.

Please, show us all where Penny told anyone their taste was wrong.

And while you're at it, you might want to apologise to those who
    did
    go to art school.

1.) I'll be glad to - the default avatars are not made by Linden Lab, they were provided by in-world content providers whose names are on the content. The only Linden Lab provided shape is "Ruth", whose face is not her fortune but who is basically proportional, including having hands and feet that are NOT nubbins, and who is only a few inches taller than the average RL human female. Therefore, any difference from Ruth among the default avatars was a choice made due to the taste of a real-world creator. Ergo, Penny is telling those creators that their taste is wrong. You're welcome.

2.) If you consider fashion design programs to be art school you should take into account that fashion illustrations are wildly non-human-proportional and have been for decades.  I don't see a problem with fashion-oriented people creating 3D versions of these super-leggy sketches - it's actually less troublesome than. say, trying to turn tall RL teenage girls into basically skinny gay men

  7. You can only sell objects you have permission to transfer. Also, it may be difficult to sell on Marketplace currently because they're phasing out the old system that allowed single items to be sold and last I heard that function isn't part of the new system yet.

Also, there's no real reason to delete old furniture completely - if it's transferrable you can just take it into your inventory again and if it's copyable you can just delete the rezzed objects but still have the originals you bought in your inventory. You wouldn't be able to sell most copyable furniture anyway.

But normal support is not officially supported as we speak on the agni grid, since it's alpha (very alpha).

It is very very much beta. Why else would it be on the beta grid?

I think we can expect it pretty soon.

SERVER support is in beta at least. VIEWER support is in alpha. Think of it as the basketball court has been built but the team has just started practicing. And they're kind of clumsy right now.

  9. I got mine from a little store called DEVO that's tucked away in the basement of the Curio skin store. Your avatar appears to remove it from their waist and hold it to take a "call", and you can trigger "calls" randomly or on demand. It's strictly decorative but it's fun.

More Details? Maestro--this is across the board when it comes to Mainland.  My first post with Stats was right after Help Island Pubic was restarted.  My second post stats were from Korea1 but it doesn't matter what Mainland sim. your on, it seems like this is happening on most I visit.  I mean with these conditions anywhere on the Grid no matter where you are, how do you ever expect Valve to let you guys on Steam?  I can't believe you all don't have some kind of simulator monitoring system of the about 27,000 sims showing in real time their statistics and throwing out alerts when they are running bad or down.

Sounds like you're describing BUG-355, a problem that's been around for months. Occasionally sims with a moderate number of avatars will temporarily have their physics frame rates plummet and net time skyrocket, usually when there is a steady stream of avatars arriving. It's happened at server usergroup meetings before. When the population stabilizes the framerate goes back up.

It only happens in certain areas - it looks like some avatars trigger the problem and others don't. When it hit the server user group meetings it was when a group of "fashionistas" showed up en-masse to discuss a problem they were having. Other sims with more, but different, avatars seem basically unaffected.

), i`m starting to feel crazy lol

It sure would be nice if we could nail a common denominator.

I would love to have your system!

I'm wondering what the size of the textures that were used are.

Without very specific instructions I just dont have the technical know how to diagnose any of this.

All I can do is try to provide as much info as possible.

I may have noticed something - it seems the most likely prims to not appear are ones that are partially in and partially out of your field of view when you teleport into a place that's in your cache - i.e. some of my alts live in fairly small buildings. (Hey, at least I provide homes for them.) When they log in or teleport home, frequently things like the floor and side walls don't appear until the building is rightclicked. These prims are in such locations that some of the corners are in the field of view and some of them are out of the field of view when they land.

The walls they're facing will show up because they can see all corners, and the back wall which is completely out of their view will appear when they turn around because the viewer knows it's something that's entered their field of view that wasnt' there before. With the half-in half-out objects it's like the viewer doesnt' think it's visible for initial drawing because part of it is out of view, but when your camera moves it doesn't recognize it as a new object because part of it was in the field of view already.

This would explain why they often appear when zooming out - the viewer realizes it has to load the lower-resolution "distant" view of the object when you zoom out, then when you zoom back in it will re-draw the higher-resolution "close" texture.

  12. Your laptop is too old to run Windows 8 properly because Intel, your graphics chip maker, isn't going to issue new drivers to support that chip fully under Windows 8. If you want to run Second Life on that laptop you need to go back to the operating system you used before.

    :)

Very cool, and I wasn't taking exception to what you were saying, I was just giving a little more background because I was fairly familiar with the situation.

  14. Monty's been working on HTTP textures for a few months - it isnt' strictly fair to say that the problems you're seeing are a Firestorm bug because it was inherited from the Linden Lab code. Certain modems didn't handle HTTP texture requests well and Monty's been trying to reconfigure things to get around that - his changes are in the current LL viewer and have been picked up by the TPV's but some (like Firestorm) haven't released their viewers with updates yet.

I've been using cable internet recently and HTTP textures are actually significantly faster than UDP for me. People who still have problems using HTTP textures should try to get to the bottom of them because they're just going to be more and more common.

...and I need somebody to draw me a picture, apparently. I don't quite grasp how land ownership works. I want a plot of land. I understand that, premium member or not, I have to pay for that plot of land. I will probably, in fact, pay for said plot from a private seller. Now, do I have to pay weekly/montly fees to LL for having/using this land? Or once I purchase the plot is it mine forever and I don't have to pay anything on it ever again?

Thanks, all, for having patience with a land noob.

If you're asking a question you're not stupid at all. You can tell the stupid ones on the forum because they do something without understanding, DON'T ask questions first and whine about it later. Anyway...

You'll pay continuing fees for any lot you buy in SL - you can't buy once and then live there free forever.

With a premium membership you can buy land on the "Mainland" directly from Linden Lab and will pay monthly fees to them in hard currency.

With either a premium or basic account you can buy land from a private estate owner - you'll still pay fees to them, generally weekly and in Lindens though some have hard currency options as well. If you buy from a private seller you don't pay anything directly to LL.

Prims not showing up until you right click on them is without a doubt a client problem. I'm not going to dig up JIRAs to see if this was confirmed or not, but if it was a server issue - right clicking on it wouldn't make it show up.

The fact that you can select it at all means that your viewer is aware it's there - just for some reason the viewer's forgetting to render it.

I also see this problem with attachments, hud elements, etc. Been here for .. idk I feel like almost a year now. I think I actually posted a JIRA about it a loong time ago.

But why is the client suddenly having a problem it didn't have two months ago?

In Firestorm which has not been updated in several months the problem is growing worse.

It's there in the official viewer too.

Something the Server is not doing is not flicking the switch to tell the Client to 'show' that prim.

A check-sum for a cached textured perhaps breaking down?

This is totally outside my technical expertise.

Something is not tripping the switch in the Viewer to tell it to display that Prim when I first arrive at a location.

The viewer problem may be similar to a person with a speech impediment - for example, if you have a lisp you tend to pronounce "s" as "th." In normal speech it's noticeable but not a major problem. Now lets say this person finds themselves called upon to recite an alliterative speech that uses the letter "s" an abnormal amount - they'll suddenly start sounding much worse (or "thuddently thtart thounding") but the speech itself can't really be blamed.

  17. The changes to the viewers required for SSB haven't been released yet in the major viewers - they're currently in a development viewer that will soon be promoted to "beta" status, or next in line for release. The viewer will be officially updated when the code is ready - it should be called 3.5.1. If you can run 3.5.0 you should be able to run 3.5.1 without problems.

Thank you for saying that, because it gives me a reason to mention this. The day after the CHUI viewer rollout, I happened to meet an avatar who started that day. She was completely up to speed, including with chat and IM's, and I asked her a couple of times if she had been on SL before. She said no - she said she popped in, went through one of the portals at the new Destination Islands labled "Newbie Help" and landed at what sounds like NCI, and got all the help she needed. New people are like children - they absorb new things quickly. It's older people who have trouble learning.

Now we can fly, sail, have all kind of fast sports and activities again.

It's like to recover my freedom...

I hope LL will understand that a lot of people are gamers in SL and not online to chat only.

So, there are 2 options :

To keep the 1.x viewer alive.

Or to really really improve the speed of the new generation viewers.

Their framerate is really poor and can drop at any time.

And yes, my computer is really fast enough to run SL and tried a lot of different settings and viewers.

And sorry to sound a bit rude, but if you think that new generation viewers can match the speed of the best 1.x viewer, I have to tell you that you don't know what you are talking about... maybe you use SL as a social network only, or spend all your time to build... whatever, I bet you don't spend your time to practice dynamic activities.

I aim at nobody in particular.

I would want just to be understood,, because we could recover an almost perfect SL world to fly, etc... and I feel that we're going to lose it again, wich is good for noone.

    TY.

Have you used a Linden Lab viewer since 3.4.5? On my machine with a Nvidia GT 640 card, the current Linden Lab viewers have higher frame rates than the PRE-MESH version of Phoenix. I get much higher framerates than with any previous mesh viewer even in crowded locations and get very little framerate drop over time. The rendering engine was heavily revised in 3.4.5 - most TPV's haven't released a viewer using the new rendering engine yet so if you're running a TPV you won't see it yet.

  20. Your SL account isn't associated with a location so the move itself had nothing to do with the login failure. You either have some sort of connection problem in your new location (most likely) or there was some sort of LL network issue at the time you were logging in. If that was the case it should be fixed by now - I'm logged in as I type this.

If you have a mobile computer try logging in from a public location at your new place just to test things.

  21. Did they say you'd be banned FOR 1444 minutes (roughly 24 hours) or IN 1444 minutes? If it was the latter, think about it - if you were banned, presumably for doing something bad, why would they give you ADVANCED NOTICE of it, thereby giiving you a day to practice your supposedly evil ways? I see ZERO chance of that happening.

If you actually were banned you probably wouldn't have been able to log in at all. There's a slim chance your account may be put on some sort of administrative hold for a day but this whole thing sounds very unlikely.
