they can be pretty insistent. They also know how to copybot and i wouldn't want our products to pay the price over revenge or something.

if they do copybot your stuff then DMCA. Stuff doesn't have to be on sale to be DMCA'd. Can DMCA anything inworld that is yours

  2. am not sure how someone can force themselves into your team

if you mean that you don't want them in your view, chat or IM then block them

if you don't want them on your land then add them to banlist

people can flag MP stuff and write abuse reports as much as they want. When MP stuff is incorrectly listed then LL will take action, regardless of the motivation of the flagger. LL won't act on any abuse report when is no substance to the report

so block, ban and forget that you ever knew this person. Even when they do seem pretty annoying

IMHO RLV should have never been allowed to block IMs.

i don't see any value for myself in these kinda restrictions either

for me a useful roleplay facility is allowing force sit and dress/undress. Anything beyond this then I have no use for myself

i can see a roleplay experience where a person who enters thru a portal can have such a collar temp-attached which can force sit/undress/dress. A prison roleplay for example where the collar/shackles wearer is the prisoner and is automagic assigned to another person who entered thru the guards portal, for the duration of the roleplay

  4. just kinda guessing what is being asked for

    - a collar that is custom textured for a specific scene
    - with a opencollar script mod that when the collar is worn, the master/mistress is automagically the owner of the wearer
    - the collar script has no ability for the wearer to add anyone else as owner/trusted. The ability to do this reserved for the master/mistress
    - the wearer cannot Run Away
    - the collar is no-mod for the wearer

So the poet Horace's life and career rather give the lie to his poetry there.

i agree with the sentiment behind your post

is always difficult for me when war is portrayed in heroic and noble terms. Is nothing noble or heroic about war

within a war zone people can do noble and heroic acts. Pretty much always a selfless act that puts themselves in danger while saving someone else from harm. People outside of wa rzones tho also do similar selfless acts everyday where they put themselves in harms way to save another person

so I don't see selfless acts in war as anything special really. With today's modern professional military, is just a job. Not a job like any other but still just a job. Go to the worksite, do the business, come home. The emphasis being on coming home. And if coming home means run, then run

  6. the beta grid is independent of the main grid.  It was made to simulate the main grid, including parcel sales, ownership and management. LL give us a L$ allowance on beta grid (a L$ balance which is independent of main grid) to allow us to test stuff to do with money

most people who have parcels on the beta grid got them when it first opened and have retained them ever since. Which does make it more difficult sometimes for later signups to test and experiment with scripts and stuff that have to do with land

sometimes I think that parcels on the beta grid should be sandboxed - time limited. So that people can grab a parcel to test stuff on, knowing that in x hours/days/weeks  the parcel is going to be reclaimed by the estate and reset for sale to Anyone. It might have to be altered so that Anyone means anyone other than the previous owner

On the other hand, my own great grandfather lied about his age to enlist, and ended up a career soldier, the only one in my family. I suspect he enjoyed the life, but for a man of his class -- the labouring poor -- it must have provided not merely security but also a certain amount of social prestige and recognition (he retired a regimental sergeant major). It was a good job. But how many other reasons must there be to join up?

    yes

people have all kinds of reasons for joining the military. Sometimes it works out for them. Sometimes not. Like you say for young people from working families then can be for quite ordinary reasons. Like when display aptitude then can secure trade certifications, university qualifications, etc. Things that can be beyond young people without incurring large debt to obtain these as a civilian

like your grandfather lots of people also join up for the excitement, a way to see the world, etc. Assuming they do make it thru basic training. The tranches of basic training (being a professional military these days) does tend to knock the stars out of anyone's eyes. Cold hard reality has a way of settling people down. Or they realise it is not for them really afterall, leave and go do something else. Which is all good also

what other reasons might a person have for joining the military ? Lets look at Afghanistan. 17 years now and still counting

sometimes people ask what is the point of people continuing going to Afghanistan and dying. What is the military objective there ?

in laypersons terms then the objective is suppression of the enemy's ability to wage war anywhere other than where they are. Better to contain the enemy someplace else, rather than on your own territory where your own families are at risk. When don't take the fight to the enemy where they are then they will bring it you where you are, on their terms. As what happened in the USA on 9/11 for example

is all kinds of reasoning for why 9/11 eventuated, who did what to who, when why and what for. The reality is that 9/11 did happen and the military responded accordingly. And will continue to respond (fight them over there rather than here at home) until there is a diplomatic resolution

I was reading up on Blender history, and the format of license it has, it seems parts or all of the code can be used in other apps, so long as said app is also free and Open Source.  Does the SL Viewer have a compatible license for that scenario?

the licenses are compatible yes for you/me/us to merge the source codes ourselves. Would LL ever do this themselves ? Probably not. Incorporating GPL license code into the viewer code would mean LL losing control of the viewer code base which is not something I can see them wanting to happen

  9. @Fionalein

there is always an amount of xenophobia in any population. The current state of Germany today is nothing like it was in the period between the World Wars. Can seem like the whole place is going to fall apart sometimes when view everything thru the breathless reporting of viral media. But the people of Germany (same with the current USA population with whats happening there) actually like democracy and when the fearmongers go to far then the population asserts itself.  The mid-terms in the USA are the latest example of that

Does that feel a bit surreal?

    yes it can be

is why I said earlier that war is ineffective in itself to make a better world. Diplomacy (like working thru issues for as long as that takes, years if necessary) is far more effective to make a lasting better world

when the objective is to facilitate a regime change in another country then war is very attractive to people who have no idea about war and what is required when you win. Winning battles is not winning a war. When the last battle has been fought and won then the victors have to occupy the territory of the losing side. Then subjugate the people remaining for decades and raise their children as their own, instilling in them the values of the victors

the last time this happened was after WW2. The USA occupied Japan and changed the japanese people to embrace the values espoused by the USA. Same with West Germany. Decades later Germany and Japan are pretty much unrecognisable from what they were leading up to WW2, as are the children of these countries today

  11. i just add something else about why I mention Peter Jackson

while I get that this thread is about soldiers themselves,  what happened to them, what they went through, I find it difficult to separate out what happens to soldiers war and what the soldiers believe that they are fighting for

being from a military family which has sent many to fight in wars down the years then as far as my family goes then things like honor and patriotism and sacrifice aren't why we fight. We go fight because we can, and because we like the combat and because we are good at killing. My first cousin will be the next to go. Her pass out parade is in February. She will put her hand up and go to the next battle as soon as she can

...well it was Peter Jackson - that explains it all. He claimed to do a do a "true to the book" adaption of the Lord of the Rings as well, ROFL - we all know what became of that one.

not to derail the thread any further but :

Peter Jackson is a great film maker for sure.  He did tho manage to extract 250 million dollars from the taxpayers and his own special legislation from the then government so that everybody who worked for him on his films could be treated as contractors and not employees as and when he chose

the then NZ government caved to his demands, when he told them that he would take his film productions elsewhere. Eastern europe as he mentioned at the time

the legislation (known locally as the Hobbit Law) is here: http://www.legislation.govt.nz/act/public/2010/0120/latest/whole.html

the current NZ government is going to repeal this law, due to its provisions that treat people within the film industry differently to people in other industries

  13. am not sure that the outcome of WWI lead to the world being a better place. Given that it lead to WWII

the outcome of WWII did tho lead to a better world at least for some people in some areas of the world, while also not good for some people who were nominally on the winning side

I think war as a change agent for better is ineffective. It can be effective as a way to change regimes but for most people as indivduals, as humans, then diplomacy as a change agent, does much better for us

  14. as a general rule, is not a good idea to pull randomly from search engines like google, bing, duck,  etc

there are a number of image and texture web sites which you can access and read the Terms set by the artist/photographer. Many of who allow us to use their work in any way that we choose. So always best to use those works where the terms explicitly say so

  15. you welcome :)

and is all good about noticing things or not. Most of us are the same. Look at all the options and settings and go; umm! I think I will go shopping instead and worry another day about all the things I dunno and don't need to know right now

and when I do need to know about what I dunno then I will ask somebody else who might know what I dunno :)

  16. with LL standard viewer

on the login page is the login to location dropdown list. Choices are: My Last Location and My Home. My Last Location will be your skybox when you log out from there

if you want to also surface your Favorites Bar locations in the drop down list

Me \ Preferences \ General \ Show favorite locations on login screen

  17. the Favorites Bar can be enabled to display in the dropdown list on the login window when the viewer starts. So you can pick your Home landmark from there

the other thing you can select is: Login to last location.  What I do myself is go home (either parcel or landmark Home depending on where it is) before I log out. So that my last location is always my home parcel/space

  18. when the parcel is group-owned then the landlady as group owner may have disabled the ability to Set Home

this is sometimes done when renting tenant space on group-owned land. So that previous tenants who have vacated the rental will not continue to get sent to the parcel (now rented by someone else) when they press their viewer Home button

a way to get to your skybox easily in this situation is to create a landmark for your skybox. Rename it Home and add it to your Favorites Bar

  19. is not simple for the reasons that Nalates mentions

if we don't use a mod of Flight Feather then will have to make a physics engine to move the avatar pretty much in the same way. The next hard part after getting the avatar to move smoothly at walking speed, is detecting which surface is under our feet and then apply forward motion and relative downward force (relative to the surface)

Example. Walking up a wall.  In response to W key presses: Apply Z force to move up. Apply enough X or Y force(depending on direction) to stick to the wall without pushing the avatar thru it

would be good if the SL avatar could do this out of the box yes. It can't tho so we have to make our own physics-based movement engine to enable this
