I think over time, Linden Labs will back-port Sansar improvements into SL, when the VR craze levels out.

Wouldn't make sense to be honest.  They are better off converting Sansar's VR UI to a desktop friendly UI.  Sansar has a lot of UI problems for desktop users and making text-chat easier would be a huge improvement for communication.  SL already does this pretty well.

If anything, LL would be better off selling Sansar and create an SL 2.0.  I'm pretty sure the SL community would've been more excited for the latter since 99% of them didn't own a VR headset when Sansar was announced.

  2. I actually started with OS Grid around 2013 (found it after i tried IMVU), then Inworldz, then eventually SL.  It wasn't until later on that i found out that OS Grid and Opensim were basically opensource versions of SL.

My first SL experience was confusing.  I was thrown onto a path to learn movement, jumping, and flying.  I heard a lot of people on voice chat trolling and being obnoxious so i turned it off immediately.  After the tutorial i reached a circular platform with all these people and portals around me and thought it was cool.

After all that, someone sent me a folder for freebies and landmarks, so i TP'd to London's freebie megastore and saw all the cool things i could get for free.

I'm not personally interested in Instagram, so don't know much about it, but isn't it owned by Facebook? If so, does it have the same issues with "fictional" accounts?

Yeah, it's owned by FB, but i've never seen Facebook or any promotion of FB on IG, so they are practically separate entities.

You can use any name you want on IG and can change it whenever you want (iirc).  You can't have two names though, but you can use underscores and periods.  For example, you could try using Sylvia.Tamalyn or Sylvia_Tamalyn, or other variations such as Sylvia.Tamalyn_.

How this different from giving your avatar Flickr (higher resolution pics), Facebook (got one, haven't used it in years), or Twitter (as per FB)?

It's a serious question: what are the advantages of Instagram? I don't have an account RL or SL.

Instagram is a huge platform especially among younger audiences, photographers, artists, celebs, musicians, fashion, influencers, etc.  You can set up hashtags making it easier for people to find you.  It also has a cleaner UI compared to FB or Twitter.  You can practically upload limitless photos and videos too.  Instant feedback with notifications.  Private or public accounts.

It takes getting used to at first, but once you learn how to navigate, it becomes a superior platform compared to FB and Twitter.  The only downside is that nudity is not allowed and it makes it difficult for SL users who want to share photos like that.

In my opinion though, Flickr is still superior when it comes to photo sharing and detailed information.  The only problem with Flickr is that it's not popular within the social media world.  It's basically in it's own sphere and your audience is smaller.  There's also the upload limit too which sucks if you upload a lot.

If you don't upload nudity or don't care about detailed photo information, then i would suggest switching to Instagram.

Oh, and there's also Tumblr, but it's going through some turmoil right now due to their recent ban on porn and nudity.

Wow, you really don't know much about SL history do you. There was a fair amount of time when there was a teen grid for those under 18 and the main grid for those who were older than 18. Pretty much what you suggested. It didn't work. The teen grid had nowhere near the content. There was constant piracy of main grid items and, since adults weren't allowed on the teen grid, no real way to check if your items were being stolen. Finally, the age verification company LL was using was so crappy that there were more teens on the main grid than on the teen grid while many actual adults had issues trying to verify. LL finally more or less gave up and consolodated them. That's when they made a cursory effort to move adult stuff to Zindra, but I think that was mostly for press releases. The fact is there is just as much adult activity on the rest of the grid as there ever was. I'm sorry if you've been hiding under a rock and didn't notice that.

I wasn't hiding under a rock.  I just never heard of SL until i found Opensim around 2013 and then i joined SL shortly after.  Your condescending attitude says more about you living in a virtual world bubble than it does about me "hiding under a rock".

That's kind of what I'm remembering. The difference being that if the account was created before those changes then you get the 500L. Shoot, I'd be happy with the 300Ls if I could afford premium.

L$300 is peanuts for SL's economy.  That's the average price of hair these days.  Skins are usually 1200+.  Clothing and outfits are anywhere from 250-500.  Shoes are 500-800.  Makeup around 250+.  Now imagine if you want to buy furniture and accessories for your parcel of land.  You can forget about it.

The stipend has never adjusted to SL's ever changing economy, which isn't that desirable once you look at the prices of everything.

Why? What on earth? Why should I have to be segregated as if I'm something shameful? My lindens hold the same value as anyone else's. Adult accounts shouldn't be able to see or communicate with non-adult accounts? That's ridiculous. I have sex in the real world, too, yet I'm still able to converse with people who may not have sex. Children even! Priests! Nuns! Oh, the horror!

Yes, I engage in adult activities in SL. A lot of them. I also shop nearly every event, live on Bellisseria, go see live music, explore, pay tier on another property, spend thousands of lindens on the MP on everything from BDSM gear to a bowl of pink roses as well as a ton of in-world retail shopping... I do all the things PG accounts do, spend the same money, AND spend even more paying for memberships to exclusive adult sims, clubs, and resorts as well as the expensive X-rated furniture the PG accounts don't.

    Segregate me? Absolutely not.

If people don't want to go to adult sims or view adult profiles, they have that option. Hiding adult accounts and pretending we don't exist is absolutely ludicrous and offensive. Without us, SL wouldn't have lasted as long as it has.

Because regardless of your personal opinions, sex has always been a taboo subject in societies, past and present.  I should've been more clear, but i meant from a business perspective, and the safest move would've been separating accounts.

Look at it from a business viewpoint.  Imagine if a popular brand such as Nike or Sony were in SL.  You really think they want their businesses associated with a virtual world that allows BDSM, rape, and *****?  The backlash and boycotts wouldn't be worth it for them.

  8. It's times like these when i wish there was an actual alternative to SL.

Opensim could have been a great alternative but content creators stayed away due to copyright issues, rightfully so in my opinion.  High Fidelity and Sansar were also good alternatives but they were built for VR and left desktop users grumbling. Sinespace could've been great but their avatar system and UI is a nightmare.

I might have to revisit Kitely again and see how their marketplace is doing.

  9. I'm not sure there's much they can do at this point.  The platform is going to be 16 years old and it's early userbase has already moved on.  There's an entire generation of young adults and teens that have never heard of SL   I personally didn't hear about SL until 2013 and i'm in my late 30s.  It's just not as popular anymore.

To put it in perspective, SL released in 2003, now add 16 years to say someone who was 14 at that time.  They would be 30 years old today.   Or say someone who was 24  in 2003, they would be 40 today.  Linden Lab should build their product around an aging userbase, which is probably 35+ these days.  These people have bills and families now, so raising prices on them isn't a good idea.

LL barely has any original content and rely too much on landowners and content creators for income.  When i first joined, they only had Linden Realms, iirc.  Then they added Paleoquest and Horizons later on.  They aren't that bad for some silly fun games, but they are obviously designed for teens or younger adults.

Having original content would have been more enticing to a wider audience.  Their entire marketing strategy, from what i've seen in past videos and articles, has been about owning land and creating content.  Did they really expect the vast majority of people to buy and rent land, or be proficient enough in building and scripting?  It might've been great for real-world businesses, but we all know how that turned out.  It failed, and LL still relies on that strategy to this day, when there are various other methods to be used, i.e. mobile and the mmorpg free-to-play models.

Not to derail too much by bringing up Sansar, but it was a step in the right direction, because it seems to have been developed for an entirely different userbase, let's say people in their mid 20s or early 30s.  It's major problem was the premature adoption of VR because it relied heavily on steep PC requirements and had an unbearable UI for desktop users.  It could've been SL 2.0, and i'm sure many SL users would've migrated over, but it just wasn't user-friendly at all.

Secondly, and the PG people will hate this, but I'd quit trying to hide the adult side of SL and pretend it doesn't exist. I would look at many different marketing campaigns for many different segments and streams of potential customers. The joy of SL is the variety of options and the adult side of it is huge. There is enough room for everyone, even if they start marketing to certain segments of people who would only come into SL for the naughty stuff. Whenever I visit an... er... adult video site, I'm bombarded with sidebar ads for adult games and virtual worlds, and they are all crap compared to what you can do in SL, especially when it comes to the visual of how an avatar looks.

That isn't to say they ignore the PG side as well... sure, market to the... okay, I don't know where to market that since it's the side of SL I'm decidedly NOT interested in and have no idea what the appeal of it is, but since there are apparently people who don't have SLex, I'm sure there's something that brought them to SL...

Anyway, yeah... that's what i'd do. I'd quit trying to pretend that SL doesn't have a thriving and vibrant adult scene and capitalize on that.

Linden Labs biggest mistake was not separating Adult accounts from everyone else.  There should have been a total separation.  Flagged adult accounts should have had their own servers and unable to communicate or see non-flagged adult accounts.  They could still do it, but it's going to cause a lot of backlash and technical problems now.

Look at this realistically -- not from "your" point of view (and I know that is always difficult).

It cost LL almost nothing (just some programming time) to switch some group slots FROM "free users" TO "paid users".  Personally I care nothing about group slots as I use 20.

LL is trying to balance things a bit better. Most "free" folks have the option to go premium if they choose. If groups are all that important to them, then perhaps they will.

IF a ton of free members leave and THAT translates to a HUGE reduction on the Marketplace, then maybe The Lab will rethink, but honestly I don't believe  it will happen. Most of the basic membership folks that I know (and I was one for over ten years)  spend some money but not tons. There are oh so many "free" citizens that NEVER spend money -- hence LL gets no income from them in any way. The freebie society is a good and viable one, but it doesn't pay the bills on the servers and for the employees.

We all have choices. It looks like this will cost me about $150 US more each year.  I could leave my new premium and give up my Bellisseria home and get rid of my land and only sell on the Marketplace.  That doesn't make much sense to me. That is $12.50 a month or so.  Many folks pay more than that for an online game that they play once and discard.

Free citizens contribute indirectly though.  They keep sims busy and communities active.  Without them, the SL userbase would drop dramatically, which would ultimately drive away content creators.  It's a domino effect.

Not all basic members are free citizens either.  Some of them are casual people who do not want to pay for premium since they only log in occasionally.  They might buy lindens directly instead.  Limited groups, and other restrictions, feels like punishment to them.

If you don't want to see adult content than you can go to G rated sims and set your filters to G ratings onky. You can also go to grids with no sexual content. If someone sexually harasses you, report, block, and move on. I understand not wanting to see adult content but others are still entitled to their lifestyle choices.

It's not that simple though.  Most of the popular events or clothing brands are set to Mature or Adult, so it's really difficult to avoid seeing the bound gimp/slave and the half-naked leashed and collared bdsm sub/slave.  Setting your rating to G severely limits the SL experience.  Don't get me wrong, i'm not taking a side here, just stating that there are pros and cons with the rating filters.

  13. The deformer is not a bad concept.  Look at it this way...  You can actually save time and money by having one body, instead of constantly switching to another body and setting up multiple outfits for each one.  You also wouldn't have to constantly worry about switching skins, tattoos, and so on.

If i remember correctly, this is sort of what Liquid Mesh was supposed to do, but Fitted Mesh ultimately prevailed.  Fitted Mesh worked great on standard avatars, but with the advent of mesh bodies, everything became dependent on specific mesh bodies.  This deformer seems to have the solved the problem.

I can't verify if it works properly, but if the deformer let's us use all the major clothing brands for the top bodies, then it's actually a nice workaround if you just want to use one body as a default for modeling, poses, photography, etc.

....or perhaps i'm misinterpreting the entire concept of the deformer. haha.

I don't know what happened, but my response from last night isn't here.  I got the latest version of Catya, checked all the settings, and it's still there. I've TP'd to other regions and it's still there. I'm using the same windlight I was using when it wasn't there (Analu *Studio* 5,), which is better than Nam's.  I've changed my hair several times, I've changed skins, shapes, clothes, etc. and it's still there. Nothing has been added to our house either. It doesn't make any sense. I really don't know what to do or where to go for help.  When I logged out one night, it was fine, but when I logged in the next day, it was there.

Try clearing the viewer's cache or use a different viewer.  If all else fails, just get a new head from redelivery.  As someone said above, check the glossiness slider for the lips, then slide it all the way down.

It is really boring for no  innovative idea on mesh body over years. How about the shin, forearm, the proportion length legs and arms? How about the change the thickness of shoulder only.  You can see the Blackdesert Online MMO, they also gave player to change that over 2 years.

This is not possible due to SL's default skeleton.  They would need to redo the entire skeletal structure with different shapekeys and deformers, similar to how they added the new bento bones.

Custom skeletons can be made in Blender or Maya, but they still need to be binded to the default SL skeleton which makes it very difficult and practically impossible for using the in-world sliders for anything.  This is why all the popular mesh bodies try to match their bodies to the defaul the skeleton, so people can actually use the sliders in-world.

  16. I actually went to this store last night to see what was new, and shockingly, it's still a mess.  You would think they had learned their lesson from all the complaints last time, but nope, they doubled down on their stubbornness.  Who thought it was a good idea to make acquiring a body such a confusing and frustrating process?  The blinding white aura obscures everything around you making it difficult to see the instructions and Hud, and they made acquiring a body a literal SL Experience, where it automates your huds and moves your avatar to the next room.   It's a mystery why they don't do it the normal way like everyone else, with a normal store,  demos, and final product all easily accessible without going through so many hoops.  SMH.

The sad thing is, the TMP bodies are actually really aesthetically nice looking.  It probably would've been the top body if it wasn't for the steep price and godawful hud (which is even worse now).

It's kinda pointless now, to figure out how to legally handle an account after a death but I still like to know.

Facebook and Google have a system in place that handles death, which could also be used for incapacitated people in comas or paralyzed people.  I'm not sure how Facebook works, but i think there's an option to grant someone else custody of the account.  I think Google has a similar option, and i think they also have an option to delete the account if you don't reply within a certain time frame.

I'm not sure Linden Labs would implement something like this anytime soon though, because everything in SL is antiquated.  To put it in perspective, SL came out in 2003.  Way before Facebook and Youtube.  There have been so many internet standards since then, and i don't see LL adapting their framework to modern times.

  18. My recommendation is to take everything slowly.  SL has a steep learning curve and you cannot learn everything in one day.  You will need to have patience.  This is the first thing i tell friends from other games when i bring them into SL.  (some of them didn't have the patience and never came back, but i don't blame them, since SL's entire avatar system is a confusing mess, but that's another story for a different time ;)).

Start with youtube, but make sure to watch updated videos from at least 2016.  Why 2016?  Because that's when all the mesh heads and bodies started coming out (it might've been 2015 but i can't remember), then Bento was released shortly after that.  And you will have to learn about mesh heads & bodies, as well as bento, if you want to start creating clothing and attachments for mesh avatars.

Aeros actually has appliers for all three (Belleza Jake, Signature Gianni and SLink Physique).  In addition, they also have TMP installers, but that is not a body I recommend anymore.

In my opinion, Aeros has always had the best male skins in SL; even during the pre-mesh, system bodies days. Unfortunately, the  creator does not seem to be as active as she used to be, thus the selection is rather limited.

However, with the right tattoos or body freckles or even some light tinting, you can get a very unique look. They also have great head appliers for Catwa heads.

Eh, I wouldn't recommend Aeros skins anymore.  They aren't bad, but there are better and updated stores these days such as Stray Dog, Avenge, Clef de Peau, and L'etre.

Stray Dog seems to be the favorite among photographers and bloggers, so keep that in mind.

  20. Here's a list of landmarks for skins that i've collected in the last year or two.  There were many others, including Session as mentioned above, but they were outdated and i forgot to grab new ones for them.

You should be able to search for their stores within SL, or you can try searching on the Marketplace.  I would share the folder inworld but most of these landmarks are outdated by now.  💀

  21. Try getting a redelivery for your head and try different skins to see if it still happens.  Mesh heads do bug out sometimes, so this might be your issue.  If you still get the issue, then it's either a windlight, graphics, or some other light source.

Did you change your graphics settings too?  Sometimes the Advanced Lighting Model brings out unwanted lighting highlights and shadows that you're not used to.

edit: Also, check if your hairbase/makeup layers are on Mask.  If so, change it to Blend.
