Currently on a holdover: older gen i7, 16 GB RAM, GTX 970 while waiting for the mail to arrive with the parts so I can repair my daily driver. Cost me about 300 USD several years ago. Works surprisingly well, for now. Turns out SL isn't that bad with settings just between mid and high.

That sounds pretty limited to me.
Engaging in a team or conversing with people doesn't really factor into what a game is, but if you mostly play shooters or competitive games then I can totally understand the disconnect.
There are lots of games just like SL out there like I mentioned, and they've been there since the 90s in different forms (especially MUDs like Furcadia).
Fair enough. Thanks for the response. Like I said, I'm not a "gamer" as such even though I have, nerdly enough, been involved in group assaults on various battlefieds
That's what a game means to me, at least, and SL is just so far from it.

This opinion is held only by people with very limited gaming experience.
I dunno. To each their own, but I built my first PC in 1992 and have been a Doom-aholic ever since. I don't consider myself a gamer as such, but have plenty of experience with fx first person shooters. Been pretty immersed in some of those throughout my life. Those are games, even if you engage in a team and converse with people from the other side of the planet.. I've never viewed SL as a game, though. SL is just... SL. Hard do put an pin on it. Social platform? That sort of covers it. Metaverse? Perhaps.

I don’t have this problem because my laptop isn’t made of rice paper and glue.
Neither is my Lenovo Ideapad Gaming. The handles will crack sooner or later.

At least somewhat related to SL
Never open it on the sides. Never just carry it by the screen. If it sounds like it might crack, never power it open. The hinges will suffer.
And, as stated, they are designed to the opened in the middle, never from the side. It's back to desktop and Intel for me for a while, Ryzen shine all to everyone else.

Netflix and SL have different requirements. Netflix uses a buffered stream. If you have a slow or high packet loss connection Netflix increases the buffer size. This gives it time to reload dropped packets and stay ahead of the play-head.
SL is interactive. It cannot anticipate what you will do next. So latency is a BIG problem. While we can cache things we can't buffer because SL has to wait on your typing and mouse inputs.
Yeah, he still uses my gifted i3 from 2015 with 16 GB RAM and a GTX 790. And an SSD Actually a bit impressed how smooth streaming goes.

Satellite connections are horrible for gaming. Until you can change the speed of light, there isn't much to be done.
An alternative is to consider using your cell phone as an access point. Whether it is better depends on the phone service you have. 5G would likely be usable.
Yeah, a even a decent 4G is better than satellite. I don't live in the mountains - I only visit. My neighbour up there has satellite, and it can actually be used for Netflix. SL? Maybe just to log on and have some IMs. If I need to to connected to the web for some reason I need to find me some 4G.

Tiny hands / feet, shrunken heads, etc - you can certainly go wrong with the shape dials.
Yeah, as a guy I see a lot of that, regardless of slim, more booty of whathever. Ain't very attractive with huge T&A and a voodoo like shrunken head. Ironically, guys used to have biceps twice the size of their heads, but seem to have gotten a lot better on it

When you are banned the only solution is change your IP address and create a new avatar
Dude, you have only experienced a smigeon of SL. It's pretty vast. Don't get hung up on what may have happened to you in a single place. Explore. There's lots more to do and experience.

We aren't NPCs - although some of us may seem like it a times There's a person behind an avatar.

Ehm yes. Ever tried to spend some time time OpenSim? It's an effing anarchy. Ever tried spending some time in Meta? No? Neither has hardly anybody else. SL it is for me, as long as it lasts...

*No special tools necessary. Just plan ahead and do your homework for the route you want to take. Rehearse tricky bits before doing the whole thing.
*I like to use just one vehicle, no flying, no teleporting, no changing vehicle for the entire journey.
*Research and find alternative backup routes too if your primary route doesn't work out as planned, or is changed somehow by unexpected parcel redevelopments.
*Experiment with low graphics settings to keep the FPS rate up.
*Surprisingly, a 200m draw distance seems to actually help preload (cache) a sim in during long-distance trips and sudden background "pop-up" rez lag is reduced.
*Make your avatar as basic as possible and don't wear unnecessary scripted attachments and HUDs.
*Use an amphibious vehicle which is quick and turns easily, like a hovercraft, or can climb steep hills or cliffs - like a fast moving hovercraft!
*Don't be afraid of taking big jumps from cliff tops into the seas!
*Keep the World Map open in a top corner of your screen with "you" focused in the middle of it, so you can anticipate what is ahead.
*Have the Minimap open in the opposite corner, with parcel boundary filter on to avoid driving into or through private parcels.
*Keep an eye out for rez zones just in case you need to back track and rerez your vehicle. Don't cheat and skip sims forwards to find an "easy" place to rez.
*Find a "trip logger" HUD which counts and records all the sim names you pass through, some HUDs also record the distance travelled, your speeds and time taken.
Yeah, keep the graphics at the appropriate level for you travel experience and your pc (or whatever). And as a long-time driver in SL, don't be so afraid of draw distance. Mine is never below 128, sometimes even higher. Worked with my old i3, works with my new Ryzen as well.

I thought of a serious, hopefully helpful suggestion - if you are new to Second Life, your best bet is to make friends with other people who are ALSO new to Second Life.
They are probably looking for friends too!
You can also benefit from having friends that are "new too", because you can learn about Second Life and explore together. There is a lot to learn in Second life.
This should be on the login screen or something

I sent a pair of perfectly nice cowboy boots to my "oblivion" folder because they added 6 worn scripts without any option to delete said scripts.
Yes, I might be a little damaged from hanging out at driving SIMs too much

I think the actual companies are busy enough trying to stop RL counterfeits without worrying about SL too much...if they even think about SL at all? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Harley Davidson had this pretty huge clampdown in SL some time ago. Got one very prolific MC creator banned, which led to this major name changing thing among builders. It resulted in some "Duca"s and "Sozuk"s for a while, but most just name their things stuff like Black Devil or Speed Demon now. I've got a bike called Elwood

Just recently I have saved a few Facebook posts pertaining to Second Life using my mobile. When I log into Facebook on my PC they are not there. This has started just recently. I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem?
Saving anything SL to any RL media just spells a problem to me. You really don't want your personal business out there. And the obvious question: Why would anyone do that? Could anyone under the age of 30 (or perhaps 20, dunno) please explain that to me as though I were five?

Some of my SL hot takes because why not?
- How body mesh was introduced was a HUGE mistake.
Strongly disagree. It has, for better or worse, made SL much more immersive
- Kid Avatar's need their own separate platform, they don't need to be on the same platform that is hypersexualized.
Kinda agree there.
- SL Content creation should have stayed a hobby or at most, a second income.
Nope! That would have stipled things big time
- You're just asking for a lawsuit if you're putting RL brand logos on your virtual products.
Sure. Just look at what Harley Davidson did.
- The Community side of SL died years ago.
There are still lots of communities, just often very separate. So half agree.
- People take too much comfort in this platform's anonymity and treat people horribly because of it.
Not in my experience. Some most likely do, as with all platforms.

You are now aware that SL is older than some of its users.

This again. How come it isn't just great that some younger folks join SL? We are all worried about the new user retaining experience, let's not scare the younguns off from this geriatric experience of ours I, for one, welcome our new, young population. Full of spit and vinegar they all are, aye.
