  1. The thing about Second Life, and I think the one thing that sets it back the most, is the fps (framerate per second). I know the whole thing here is you can create whatever you want but you can't. You can only create what your computer can handle. You can only go to places that your computer can handle and lets be real here, Second Life looks like utter crap on low graphics. Its not visually appealing at all.

Years ago I took a 30k region and completely decked it out using up all 30k prims (why pay for so much and not be able to use them all?). Naturally as I added more, the fps went down and I tried to combat that by deleting many many many many scripts, alot were useless. Creators go script crazy in here. I even found a resize script for a plant! It helped but so many visitors complained they could barely walk around and mostly cammed which ruined the intent of finding many of the hidden areas and surprises. The place was made and designed as a lush AAA video game world. And I am sad to say, its not possible in Second Life to maintain that without a FPS of 5 or less which is unbearable even on low settings and I have a beast of a rig. I am comfortably on ultra half the time. Plus, the time it took to design the sim and someone comes in on the lowest settings, they aren't going to visually see the effort you put into it.

Second Life is not this platform where you can create anything you want. FPS ruins a lot of that from a landscaping perspective. Its not worth designing sims like that.

And the funny thing is, I promoted that sim outside of Second Life to help bring in new people. I brought in a few real life friends and after a few days, they just left and never returned. Their complaints? Lag/fps, visual quality, horrific ui, ridiculous learning curve, inventory,  and resource hogging.

So while Big Tech is looking at the Metaverse, and while Linden Lab is one of the pioneers of it, they have also fallen deeply behind. Focusing on mobile and avatar motions with webcam is....to be blunt, quite stupid. No one is asking for either of those. As someone who has experienced severe issues with the platform even on a modern high performance rig, its a problem and it should be addressed.

Stop teasing us with such extravagant features, damn you 😜  While we are at it though, I want images for my inventory items, a preview window to see what items look like on my character, I want tools to create mesh objects in SL, and land to be less expensive so I can have my own region included with premium.

These are literally all basic requests that many games and platforms already have. That last one though...good luck xD

What is so fun about Minecraft?  I watched my kids play and it looked pretty much like digital Lego.  I think building in SL is more fun.  So what is fun about Minecraft?  What am I missing?

And that....is precisely why Second Life will never change. Sure, it will get a few minor updates but it will forever be known to the rest of the world as an ancient platform to laugh at because it never progressed past 2006. It will be laughed at as the program older generations use....and trust me, its been that way already for a very very long time and its nothing to be proud of.

I'm against this as a whole, as are many here.  your ideas are a bit to radical,  if they create another platform, then sure, mesh it all you want. but this, this was created like people like myself and the others, it's why SL exists. it's why it will exist. if you go about ahead with this revamp and throw it all out, you kill the platform, you push every one of us paying customers away and the lab WILL not stab themselves in the foot even if you want it too.  because that's what you are saying.

I did suggest a compromise as my ideas were reaching radical levels.

    Quote

mesh ability should be added next to prim tools .

which would lock out many people whom build with prims?

    Yes.

Mesh ability also is a 3rd party tool which is NOT easy to figure out for most if any of us and those that have mastered it as I said are the ones killing it right now.

Who is "us"? This idea isn't for you. Its not for those who have been here a long time. The old needs to be thrown out and the whole thing revamped and upgraded....properly. If SL does not grow, it will die. Thats fact with any platform and you know it. Nobody likes change, even me. But I will compromise and say mesh ability should be added next to prim tools

We need fundamental platform advancement by people who are intimately involved with the platform as it is being used today.

It's not history. It's broken garbage content that's only important to a limited number of people, the most vocal of which don't even use the platform recreationally.

No one logging in for the first time sees "history", they see janky crap and then they leave.

    This.

But, I will say that there should be a museum-style sim dedicated to the ways of old. Just make sure new people never see it.

What I can't understand is why Roblox and Minecraft are so popular when they appear so crude compared to SL. Maybe META or a similar company interested in the metaverse should buy Second Life.  I would love to see the Lindens at least TRY to bring SL forward and rejuvenate it.

Because both Roblox and Minecraft are FUN. No overbloated UI's with a billion things to learn. New people come here and theres literally nothing to do except walk around aimlessly.

very nice, but why all that old inworld material still used in to show SL.

Because that is what SL is to the rest of the world.

Old. Dated. Ancient. Bringing the creator back won't do any good when you have a reputation for having outdated content. From that video, Philip came back to bring SL into mobile which is severely laughable. Might wanna clean up the business reputation first before showing off even more outdated content on a modern smartphone and tablet. And honestly, I have negative zero trust that Linden Lab can produce a 3D app for SL.

And if you wan't to get extreme, you can get a sim wide security system that ejects all but group members or specific people. I have one that can do that, but I've never used that feature.

Yeah I have no need for that as its a super private region I have through LL. Its my home, basically. Group enabled only. If it were public, I would still have group enabled and use the access list ability. I haven't used an orb in forever, haha.

True. I'm glad you changed the status that'll help some. So far, I've been lucky in the fact that he hasn't created any alts to contact me, but you know if makes me really cautious about responding to anyone and it's even harder to trust someone.

Oh, I know. People are horrible and crazy in here. Not everyone but it does seem like a lot.

Or you can block them, then you never recieve any messages from them. I finally had to do that, just to have some piece of mind plus he's on my region ban list.

I know. But sometimes they make countless alts. Its crazy. I dont think theres a limit to how many alts one can have. And your block list isn't unlimited.

Ahhh I see, I get ya now.

Are they harassing you or just saying heyup?

Have my new year's resolution and stop giving a f*ck - just choose not to respond to people. F*ck 'em all!

Well see its feb (lovers month) so I guess some troll wanted to start drama.

Or.... or or or.... How about this hilarious idea. How about you run your own OpenSim server and have an absolute gigantic 16x16 regim offline all to yourself. I know i've been crazy enough to do that. It's actually kinda fun :) A truly gigantic sandbox.

I thought about that but....the avatar quality is horrible. So is most of the items on their marketplace. If I could move my whole inventory over, I would.

What am I missing here?  You can give your secret alt permission to modify and move your house inventory and decor etc. Is being harassed something that happens to you often?  I'm concerned/baffled in equal measure.

I was just pointing out that I was wrong in my original statement that owning a region means ultimate privacy. Its not when someone can use online trackers to track when you are online and message you to harass.

... or I really would have been the best ghost hunter around back in the day ! 😂

But to Chris, there IS a way of not being tracked. Keep a secret alt secret and log in with that. Works for me!

Yeah no, that's not going to work unless I want to spend thousands of actual dollars to rebuild my landscaping, decor, and house inventory. I enjoy landscaping on this platform.

... but they only can track when someone is online, not actually know where they are on the grid.

Correct. That's what I meant. All you have to do is use an alt to track another avatar (that hides their online status from those not on their friends list) and you can continue to harass them.
