  2. Because I can't be sure anyone will see the reply to the reply to the reply to the resolution which worked once but doesn't now: http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Technical/viewer-crashes-while-initializing-textures-now/qaq-p/832619 Again the SL viewer crashed, again when I start up the viewer when it reaches "initializing textures" the hard drive grinds and grinds to no effect. The viewer doesn't register in Task Manager, but the filename in the menu bar can be closed (it says it's not responding). This time deleting the C: - Documents and Settings - (USER NAME) - AppData - SecondLife folder made no difference. Jeez, I've been a member a week now and the viewer has frozen at least once every day. So, the questions are: What do I do now? And would I have better luck with another viewer?
  3. Ugh, it did it again. Treasured Island this time. And this time deleting the Second Life folder doesn't make a bit of difference. What should I do now? Meanwhile, I'll be off researching alternative viewers...
  4. Being a less involved process than ye old uninstall-reinstall, I bit the bullet and did what you said. (Some of those folder names that get deleted are a bit nerve-wracking.) It fixed it, it works, and the only annoying thing was I had to make my adjustments to Preferences again. Thanks!

    chat not working?

Thank you both. You both gave very good advice. I went to one of the NCI Info thingy locations and managed to coax an affirmative out of someone else who was there. (*And* got some very useful starting tips from the NCI info board.) So, yeah, my chat is working.
  6. The viewer froze today while walking through Adrasta's Tattoos. The attempt to send a crash report froze. So I restarted my computer, which refused to completely shut down and I ultimately had to resort to turning it off manually. Now when I start up the viewer it can't even get as far as the login screen: When it reaches "initializing textures" the hard drive grinds and grinds to no effect. The viewer doesn't even register in Task Manager, but the filename in the menu bar can be closed (it says it's not responding). What do I do now?
  7. I'm suspecting my chat utility doesn't work and in fact has never worked. I haven't talked to many people yet. (Mostly I've been exploring my inventory and playing with avatars.) People I have talked to have either called me rude things or just wandered off. At first I thought there are just a large number of rude people in SL, but today it occurred to me that not one person made any reference to anything I said. Perhaps my messages aren't getting through? Or maybe it *is* just a matter of rudeness. Surely they can see my avatar typing? What do I do about this?
  8. The hair that is provided with your account--either as part of outfits or in the Library section--is copyable and is flagged as modifiable, but it is almost impossible for the newbie to stumble onto the hair modifier. Why? --In My Avatar it's under "Eyebrowshaper" in the Body Parts menu, but your hair is under the Attachments menu. Crazy. (Click on the wrench next to Eyebrowshaper.) Worse, you can't see any of the examples. Most won't load at all, and the rest only partly load. I don't know what to do about that.
  9. Thanks Peewee. Yep, that was one way to deal with it. The solutions (for the next person who has this problem): - First thing to try is shutting down the viewer then restarting it. That often gets My Avatar and Destinations working. (In Basic mode they're supposed to be a slide show of choices.) - Alternatively, pick Advanced mode instead of Basic when you start the viewer. --You'll have to restart the viewer yet again. (Basic is intended for newbies. You'll need to use Advanced shortly anyway if you want to do anything like fine-tune your Avatar.) - As for logging out, in Basic mode I don't think you do--just close the viewer. In Advanced there's a "quit" (or "exit", I forget) where you'd expect to find it in the first menu.
  10. I have the same problem. Same with "My Avatar". I can't imagine what to do. It appears I'm not the only one. Stuck in the destination room of the Welcome thing, people keep coming in and staying. Occasionally one will disappear in a puff of sparkles. I'm guessing they're quitting in exasperation, not discovering a workaround. One girl tried flying out, but came back down. Wonder how many potential members are permanently scared off? I can't figure out how to log out with it either, so I just had to shut it down. Very bad design.
