  1. OK...I had a friend help me with several experiments regarding revoking permissions of this band this morning.  Here are our findings:

    1)  When the sub is in an animation, there is no Stand button for them to stop the animation.  So "Revoke On Stand" did not work.

    2)  To try "Revoke On Sit", I rezzed a chair, put him into an animation and he tried to sit in it.  Sitting in the chair overrode the band animation and the sit animation in the chair worked.  Standing from the chair did NOT put him back in the band animation, however, I was able to immediately put him back in the bands animation simply by clicking the animation button in the band manu.

    3)  Next, I put him into an animation and he sat in the chair again to activate the chairs animation.  I then clicked the bands animation and it overrode the chairs animation and put him back into the animation I selected.  Once I put him in the band animation, the Stand option disappeared from his screen.

    4)  Revoke on Stand and Sit did NOT revoke the permissions of the band

    5)  I had him mute me and then I tried to animate him again.  The animation worked without a flaw.  Muting the owner does NOT work

    6)  Next I teleported to another sim and tried to use the band.  I got an error message indicating that the sub could not be found and had to be within 96m of the Master.  Then I teleported back to him and tried to animate him again.  The animation worked flawlesly.  Trying to use the band on a different sim as the sub did NOT break the script.

    7)  Next we tried "Stop Animating My Avatar" in Phoenix.  I put him in an animation and he used the stop.  It actually did stop the animation from running!  However, I clicked the animation again in the band's menu and he went right back into the animation as before.

    8) In Phoenix (and I assume Firestorm) there is an animation explorer in the World menu.  In that explorer is a list of currently running animations with the option to "Stop and Revoke Permissions."  I put him in an animation, he used that option and sure enough, the animation stopped.  However, when I clicked the animation in the band menu again, he went back into the animation as before.  "Stop and Revoke" did NOT revoke the permissions of the band.

    9)  Next I put him into an animation and had him teleport to a different sim.  The animation did NOT stop when he got to the other sim nor did it stop when he got back.  Teleporting does NOT stop the animation.

My final conclusions:  While there are things that will make the running animation stop, NONE of them revoke the permissions of the band and the owner of the band can, at any time, start the animation again.

If anybody can think of anything else, please let me know and I'll try it.  I just couldn't think of anything else to try.

On EDIT:  Just an FYI - My friend was NOT running RLV during these tests.

Ah.. if muting the owner works, that's rather less alarming, I guess, assuming you know who it is.

Innula, I am inworld now but none of the people I have locked into my band are.  Once I can test these ideas, I'll report back here as soon as I can.

the simple solution is just to add revocation to the viewer code.... this would solve both the problem of people tricking permissions out of others, and scam items given to others (like debit siphons)...

I see no need to auto revoke permissions that are granted normally, as they are a major convenience and neccesity in some cases... just need the ability to revoke already granted ones when you want.

I don't know how well these functions actually work in Phoenix and Firestorm, I have always left this set at the default function.

Also, I don't know how well this would work against the function in question here.

I'm not particularly up to the job of playing guinea pig here.

I do wonder if you knew who the controller was, if muting that individual would stop the action?

The only way to know this for sure is to test it and see.  Interesting idea here, Perrie.  I'll conduct this test, changing the revoke permissions in Phoenix and then having him mute me to see if that stops the bands ability to control his avatar, when I get inworld in a short while.  I'll post the results here in another response.

    Perrie,

You can "buy" what I said or not.

Are you faulting me for taking this to an 'impartial jury' so to speak in order to find out more?
I really hope not.  And given the details of this security flaw, details that are starting to creep out into the public eye, I am glad that I pursued this matter.

I have no reason to believe that you personally have any nefarious intentions.  But sadly there are others who log into Second Life with the sole intent of getting their jollies by harassing others.  And as I stated above, I now believe that this has been going on 'under the radar.'

I never discount things because there exists a potential for abuse.  I wouldn't say let's get rid of the automobile simply because someone could choose to use it as a weapon.  But I don't believe that having an irrevocable permission running in Second Life is in the best interest of the Residents.

Absolutely not.  It sounded to me from the way you said it that you didn't believe me when I said the permissions can not be revoked by the sub.  I was just trying to assure you that it is true.  I used my band to control the subs that belonged to me, and one other who didn't but wanted to be on my band anyway and I never used it to grief anybody.

I am not sure where else to pose this question and this seemed to me to be the most appropriate section of the forum to ask this.

In the Lifestyles and Relationship sub forum there is a thread about an item called "The Master's Band."

In that thread, a poster makes the statement that once you grant another Avatar permission to animate your Avatar through this item like can be done with a scripted collar or an RLV enabled viewer, that their is no way to revoke this permission.

"The only way for this to work, is for the person wearing the band to scan avatars nearby with it, select one, the person will get a drop down permissions window and they would have to select "Yes."  So, this is an opt in device.  If they were to click "No," the band owner would have no power over them.  As I said before,
if someone clicks Yes on the permissions window, there is no way for them to EVER remove themselves from it.
The owner of the band has to do it him/her self. There is no way to use it on "passersby."  They would have to opt in."  (pertinent statement bolded)

Personally, I am having a hard time buying this possibility.

Thanks in advance for your input.

    Perrie

    Perrie,

You can "buy" what I said or not.  What I'm telling you is that I have people who are still in my Master's Band that have been there since I got the thing to control my subs back in 2008.  They were put in then and are still in it now.  I tested it again today after having it in mothballs for over a year, and yes, I was still able to control one of the people who was still in the list.

If memory serves, there is a max distance one has to stay within (96m) of the sub, or the command doesn't work.  Not positive about that though.  It's been long enough I don't remember.  It may be you have to be on the same sim.

But this band works just as I have stated it does.  Once permission is granted from the dropdown menu, only the owner of the band can remove the person from it.

  6. I am still getting duplicate entries in my Inventory Management screen -  Unlisted.  In the past couple of days, I've posted a LOT of new products in my store and every single one of them have a duplicate entry.  Do we have any idea when this issue is due to be resolved?  It's drivin me nutso!  :smileyvery-happy:

    ^ This!

You are right, Toy.  I read through that post and was immediately all adrift with all the tech speak.  Thought's like, "What in hell is SQL?" etc kept going through my mind.  Then; "This chick is just showing off."  "Is she makin all this up as she goes along?"  In truth, I had no idea what ANS stood for either.  I do now and learned it from the first few words in her post.  The rest was gobbledegook.  You were right to interject, Toy.

A female newsreader on TV yesterday had very "bouffant" hair that just didn't look right, and I wanted to click it and click the -.05 button.

Whenever I check out googlemaps street view, I try to alt view inside the places I used to live or work or visit.

If I see someone interesting on the bus or in the street, it ticks me off I can't just click on them to pull up their profile.

And when I've been waiting for a bus for what seems like hours I just wish one of those driverless vehicles that patrol the Linden mainland would happen on by then I could hop on board.

    Hahahahaha!  Me too, me too!

These are two good ones also!  I've not experienced either one yet, but it could be fun!

When you start buying clothing that mimics the clothes your avatar wears.

Yep!  I've been known to look around for things similar too.  I remember once trying to find the telephone number of a store in the phone book and couldn't find it fer anything...when I realized that had totally been looking for Hoorenbeek's phone number!  LOL!

LOL this is great.  I've had those moments as well!  Most recently though, I was watching the news, and the newscaster was beatiful, with the most creamy skin.  I actually thought to myself, "Wonder where she got that skin, I need to go get a demo."  Very sad when I realized it was rl and I was stuck with my own skin and freckles.
    :)

    /me laughs!

Theres one I've not done before.  Good one Miss Eve!

  12. I think there was a thread like this a long time ago in the former forums that was a lot of fun to read!  So I thought I'd start another and see where it leads.  So...how do you know you are hooked on SL or have SL always on the brain?

1 - When you're shopping in RL and find something you really like, you wonder how many prims it is so you don't go over your limit.

2 - When you look at a price of something in RL, you calculate the cost into L$.

3 - You look around for the TP UP button when you're in a RL store with 2 floors

4 - If you go shopping in RL for school clothes, you try to find the perms on the tag so you can be sure you can transfer them to your kids

5 - When you go out dancing, the first thing you do is look up towards the ceiling to find where the danceball is

These are just 5 to get us started.  What else can you think of?

  13. Some more information is needed, here.  How do you know someone has hacked your store?  The first thing you should do is change your SL password right NOW!  Change it to something difficult to figure out like just letters and numbers (HG654vT876) for example.  Then log into your merchant account and be sure there are no names in the "Share" field in any of your listings.  Let us know what you find out!

    i use marketplace.

i prefer to buy things online, is more comfortable to me, and you always find new things, new merchants always appear and the variety grows more each day.

i evade buying things in world because i like more to spend my in world time explore interesting places, and i find more easy to look for things in the marketplace interface, specially with the filters, how you arrange things, narrow them down by category, price, permissions.

See...this is EXACTLY why so many shops are closing down and malls are disappearing.  *shakes his head*  Find what you are looking for on the Marketplace but go to the merchant's inworld store to purchase.  You never know what you will find at a store and it is really fun to go shopping and explore them!  This way...inworld stores won't become a thing of the past.

  15. /me chuckles

I had fun with this one.  I had never looked at myself in a "before & after" photo and I gotta say...I had a big laugh at my own expense!  Back in 2008, I thought I was the hottest avatar on the grid!  I even had a pro photographer take some shots of me even though I had the WORST shape ever (note my hips) and wore some of the most ridiculous clothes I've ever seen!  Back then though...I thought it was the awesomest ever!  LOL!  I'm MUCH happier with my look now though.  :)
