Mesh Defects (Blender)

I have learned, the Collada export/import process ist somehow critical with mesh-defects and unweighted vertices. 

I would appreciate, if someone has any hints, how to find loose vertices, collapsed faces etc... any good tutorials for Blender?

In Blender 2.6,

 

look at your 3d view in edit mode.

at the bottom of the window you will see some menus with one labeled select. inside select you will see loose verts  also you will see non manifold.

 

 

 great tools to help you find those loose stray verts.
