To assure you do not have parts exposed, use the alpha layer that comes with the mesh clothes.

Non-mesh capable viewers render a mesh as a prim. There is a picture of how an avatar wearing mesh and an alpha layer look at the begining of this article: SL Mesh News Week 39 - 2011. If there were no alpha layer, some parts would be exposed.

This happens because viewers older than a certain age do not have the code to render the new mesh objects. They get a mesh and wonder what type of prim it is. They default to the closest prim they can, usually a sphere. The only fix is for that person to upgrade to a newer viewer.

Fortunately 70%+ of users are using a mesh capable viewer now. Also, the number is growing.

Some people are held to older viewers because of having older computers... really old computers. Most computers made in the last 10 years or so can render mesh and run the new viewers. Some want to force them to upgrade. But, that is kind of dictatorial and anti-freedom. Fortunately the Lab is leaving it up to the individual.
