To  alrod Topaz, yes upgrading to a premium account allows you to have a Linden home, but it also gives you other benifits: You can use the premium sandboxes, you can use Live Chat help, you get 300 L every week, and you can buy land on the mainland. (If you do not have a Linden home, the first 512 m you buy on the mainland has no monthly tier. If you own more land than 512 m you must pay tier to Linden Lab every month.)

You can TP to the Hubs of each of the different themes. From there you are free to walk into unowned homes and have a look around. Note that the square footage of inside living areas can vary greatly between different styles of homes. I have found that some of the Meadowcreek homes are the most spacious if you don't mind their boxy appearance.
