In addition to specs, as Thinkerer suggested, you might consider using a stable viewer release instead of a beta release.  Beta's are test releases for the public to use and since betas are generally prone to bugs and problems, the people using the software are asked to report the problems and bugs to the developers......if you don't want to do that then use the stable release.

Check the Second Life Requirements. System Requirements | Second Life Some laptops with low end graphics are not going to run Second Life.

If the viewer will not start at all, reinstall over the top of it. If that does not help, uninstall and reinstall. You need to be doing a clean install at this point. If you use more than 1 viewer, you need to look at this information: Second Life Clean Install

Be warned, an SL Viewer UNINSTALL deletes all your chat logs.

You can run DXDiag from the START -> Start Search in Vista. That will give you CPU and graphics card info.

You can also resort to an older viewer. The SL Viewer 1.23 is still available for download. It may run with a lower end video card.
