Hi ! Have a weird issue under Linux, the latest SL viewer does not show avatar names, but the names stay forever on "(loading)" in the lists (nearby, friends, ...) and in the main view I only see the group tags. I also can't write IMs, but only reply if someone writes me first, and I guess TP offers and stuff would not be working, either ...

This happens in Xubuntu 10.10 as well as Bodhi (Ubuntu 10.04) and Arch. Tried to reset the cache, of course, and even the profle (deleted .secondlife folder), but without any effect. Running SL on a laptop with Nvidia graphics, but I think this is not the issue, because the graphics are working fine.

Is there anybody out there having the same issue ? Or even better, had the same issue and was able to solve it ?

Or the other way round, is anyone successfully running viewer 3 under Linux ? If yes, in what kind of distribution / setup are you using ? (Maybe I'm just missing a dependency)

I went back to Phoenix as workaround (Firestorm has the same issues), but I really like Viewer3 and would be glad to switch back sooner than later. So if you know how to fix this, or know anyone who knows, please help !!

Yes, I have and still use it successfully with versions a lot like yours, Natty and then Oneiric. I like to use 32 bit kernels because media compatibility is so much easier with SL that way, but was not having display name problems on 64 bit kernels with the 32 bit compatibnility stuff either. These worked OK with gerernic Ubuntu, I did not have to load any special packages.

If you switch off display names in the SL preferences, to the lists then work? That should make the names load a different way, and could give some clues about what is wrong.

Filed a JIRA report on this - https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-27352

Cerise, thanks a lot for the feedback. Really interesting that it seems to work on Ubuntu ... will have to check this out. If it works for me in vanilla Ubuntu but not in Xubuntu, it must be a missing Gnome dependency ....

Does anyone know where to find a COMPLETE list of dependencies for Secondlife ? I checked the WIKI, but a lot of the information seems to be outdated

I did some troubleshooting on this problem and found it to be the router I was on.  Switching back to the old router worked.  SL is working once again under Linux, so it may be related to a firewall setting.  I did find that when loging in if you get repeated requesting region capabilities timeouts then friends names will not load, teleports will fail, etc.

List of ports Second Life uses.

Hope this helps.

I'm having the same problem on Kubuntu x32 11.10 - yet running the Windows client on Linux using the Crossover emulation system works fine.  This indicates that there is something peculiar to the Linux environment that makes this not work.  Obviously it works for the guys who wrote the Linux version for Linden Lab, so it must be something missing from the Linux environment that's causing the problem.  It's obviously not the router per se, once again because the same machine running the same operating system can support the Windows version without this error using emulation of the Windows operating environment.

Something must be missing that the v3 client can't function without.
