Do many people read in advertising groups?

Just curious because there are some advertising groups with 1000s of members and i sometimes get like 10 notices per minute. And lots of group chat spam. Makes me want to leave those groups again fast...

Do many people actually read those ads? (well none of my friends belong to groups like that)

I suppose there are some people keen to collect all the freebies they can who don't mind being bombarded with junk mail.  Most of the many members are probably little-used alts or unused accounts that left SL ages ago though.  I leave spammy groups almost immediately, but then I'm not likely to join one in the first place.

*Shrug* these groups are very much like the leaflet-distributors that deliver junk mail to all the houses in an area.  They are legitimate in that they do what they say they'll do.  Most people are annoyed by them, although it's easier to 'opt-out' in SL.  Despite that it only takes one or two sales to make it worth while for the advertisers, so they keep doing it.

If you click on info for the group that you are a member of, you can unclick the boxes that say receive notices and group chat, so that you won't be bothered. That's essential for busy groups, otherwise you'll go insane pretty quickly. Phoenix even has an option for opting out of all group chat.

As with anything else balance the benefits of belonging to that kind of group versus the annoyances.  If you untick the 'receive notices' bit you will never hear from them again.  But, you will also never hear of the 'deals' offered, so why belong to the group?

Your choice.

I have about half of my group notices off, especially the ones who send most frequently; music venues and freebie/lucky chair groups. Then I go back and check notices when I have time and want something to do.

That is a great idea.  Just remember that notices only last 14 days.  Many times if I do not get any from a group, I forget about the group.  But, that is just me.

I have come to this conclusion about those groups.  There are no "real" consumers in the groups they are just only advertisers.  So you have a group of 3,000 advertisers advertising to other advertisers hoping that some will become consumers.

Hehe, more or less yes I'd say.  On the other hand ... in RL we all work somewhere offering goods or services to other people who work somewhere offering goods or services to other people who ..... ad nauseum.
