Why doesn't my new laptop run Second Life smoothly? Why so much lag?

I just got a new laptop with specs far greater than the recommended specs by Linden Labs. SL still lags so badly on the "recommended" settings on the viewer. I use SL viewer AND Phoenix. Both have just as much lag for me.

what graphics card does the laptop have?
the rest of the spec is great but if it only has onboard intel graphics your SL experience isn't going to be amazingly brilliant

Reduce your graphic settings from say high to mid. Reduce or illuminate all unnecessary features for best performance, as a general rule or so I believe. The less it has to do the better it will do the essentials, simple as that.
