Is it possible to take a model, with permission of course, and bring it into Second Life?

For example, there is a program where you can make created 3d models dance for music called MikuMikuDance. Would I be able take a model from there, or anywhere else, and bring it into Second Life to use as my Avatar? If so, how?

A short answer is Yes you can.

A long answer involves formatting and converter programs. I suspect it would be easier to use avatar/modeling/software which is currently being used to replicate the style of the MikuMikuDance 3d model.

I don't create Avatars, I'm not sure which programs are most popular and are easy to make ready for upload to SL.

You can make a 3D mesh object and upload that, but it has to be all your own work. Checkout the Mesh forum http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Mesh/bd-p/Mesh & you can ask for advice there too.
