The simple way is to edit the object, go to the texture tab and increase transparency until you get the level of transparency you desire.

Many textures can look like "glass" simply by changing the TRANSPARENCY in the TEXTURES pane of the BUILD menu.

 

But starting off with a believable glass texture is good.

You can either make "glass" transparent by lowering the transparency or use a texture that is partial transparent to start with. They each have their advantages.
