Search seems to be updated within minutes.  For example, if an avatar is suspended or banned, they are often removed from searches the moment that procedure is carried out. 

Classified advertisements, however, can take 24 hours to take effect, so if you pay an amount of money for your venue to appear on the searches, it might not show until the following day.

Also interesting to note is that if you and several other people input the same search term into the search engine (for example "coffee house"), even if you are all using the same viewer, you often will find you get slightly different results.
