Ubuntu Linux update broke things, but a reboot fixes it.

It looks like Ubuntu Linux pushed an update which somehow forced graphics to stop using the GPU and fall back to software emulation. You can detect this when "glxgears" (a standard Linux program that shows a few rotating gears to check that OpenGL is working.) won't run. A reboot will fix it.

This hit both of my desktop Linux machines in the last 24 hours.

Some viewers will still run, but fall back to 1-2 FPS.
