Dots and Stars and Nothing...

Looking at a list of forum subjects, I see..to the left..a black Dot or maybe a black Star. And on many I see nothing. Maybe the answer is in front of my face, but I just can't find an explanation. What do these things mean? Why do some subjects have no dots or stars?

Star -- new posts in a thread you have replied to (or your own thread) -- the star goes grey after you read everything until something new is posted & then it darkens again.

Dot -- new posts in a thread you have not replied to (new since you last read it) -- the dot goes grey after you read everything until something new is posted & then it darkens again.

Nothing -- a thread that you haven't read any of yet.

I edited my original post - I had reversed the Dot & Star initially

Also, if you click on the dot it will take you to the next unread post.
