how do i put clothes on

Outfits usually come packed in a box. Drag the box from your inventory to the ground. Click right on it, click "open" and "copy to my inventory". It will create a folder in your inventory containing the elements of the outfit (shirt, pants, etc). Just click right on each of them and choose "wear".

PS: If you dont own a place to put the box on the ground, search for a sandbox where you can rez objects (type"sandbox" in search to find one)

Do what Valerie says. But just in case you didn't buy in world, but on the market place, and you don't have a sidebar in the viewer with the inventory in; You have to log out, start the viewer again, select 'Advanced' on the dropdown menu next to the Login button on the login screen. Then you will find the sidebar with the inventory in.
