I teach a basic land class at Caledon Oxbridge University on Fridays at 5 pm SL time.  It's free to attend!

Virtual land is a major part of Second Life, although you don't have to have land to enjoy SL.  People use land in the same ways they do in Real Life...to have a place for their home, their business, or to make a beautiful place for themselves and others to enjoy.

There are two main types of land in SL...Mainland and Private Estate land.  Mainland is managed directly by Linden Lab, and to own it you must upgrade to a Premium membership.  Estates are regions owned by other residents, and you can buy land on an estate region from one of them, or rent Mainland owned by another resident, without having to be a Premium member.

If you ARE a Premium member, then you can own Mainland directly instead of renting it from another resident.  One of the benefits of a Premium membership is a free Linden Home.  If you want a larger home and/or more prims, you can buy a larger Mainland parcel instead.  If the parcel is 512 square meters or less, you won't have to pay a monthly fee (called "tier") on the land.  If it IS bigger than 512 square meters, you pay a monthly fee for it (in addition to your Premium membership dues.)  The more mainland you own, the more tier you pay.
