i completed my orientation however i do not see the red "x" in the upper right hand corner to logout

I'm a little surpised that the nasty red X is missing from the upper right corner of your screen.  However, you can always log off from Second Life by choosing Me >> Exit Second Life, or by typing CTRL + Q.

Will your professor see that you completed the SL orientation?  I have no idea.  The sequence on Learning Island doesn't report to anyone when you leave there, but if your professor is having you enter SL through a special entry region for your own school, it might.  You'll have to ask the professor.
