mesh upload won't calculate fee

i tried uploading a simple cube to see how the process works. The fee says "tbd." When I click calculate weights and fee it tells me I don't have enough linden. I have 0 right now. I just want to see the fee. Why can't I see that first?

Sounds like you have answered your own question. It appears that their logic is incorrect by apparently requiring you to have L$ before being able to proceed.

 

Anyway, if it's just a cube with optimised vertices, it will cost L$11

I did spent a few dollars to get linden, and now it lets me see the fee.

You can upload on the beta grid for free. You will need to do a second "Mesh Test" for that grid though. Items uploaded on Aditi will not transfer to the main grid, so you will of course need to upload your perfected item -- when it gets perfected. You are automatically given a certain amount of fake Lindens on Aditi.
