Hello.

When you buy land it means you buy the rights to pay rent to Second Life!

And for that you need to be a premium member.

So, with numbers:

You pay 10 dollars per month and become premium.

You pay 600 dollars for a full sim and then the monthly fee for it ( rent)

or

You just pay whatever a member of Secondlife asks for a piece of land ( usually a little bit more than L$1 per meter)

and then you pay Mainland fees (rent again)

or you find abandoned land and pay L$1 per meter or less if you win an auction.

In any case You pay the monthly "fee" ( thats rent) to secondlife with dollars.

Some people buy huge amounts of sims in private regions and they rent them out.

In this case you need to buy the land and pay rent to them. (They ask zero Lindens for to "buy" the land usually, because you cant sell or abandon their land. You can only sell the "rights" to pay rent and thats free in this case)

usually rent is cheaper than what SL asks and you pay with L$ and not dollars.

That gives you the same rights ( almost) as if you was a premium and do as above.

Just make sure you choose a decent Estate Company (Its been noticed many crooks through the years)

I hope my answer help a bit to understand how secondlife real estate works.

Wherever words are green thats a link and if you click it you will be able to read all about it in official SL pages, to have it more clear and detailed.

Cheers!

Hope you will get exactly what you need!

With pleasure,

If you are premium and in a Linden Home, you won't owe any monthy fee for land.  Alternatively you can buy mainland and the monthly fee for the first 512sqm of land  is covered with your premium membership.  Note though that you can't have BOTH a Linden Home and 512sqm of land with no fees.  It's one or the other.
