Hi Betsy,

You can stop reporting your online/offline status to friends via the gear icon in their profile. Select "Permissions" and uncheck the appropriate boxes. Scripts and some third party viewers will still reveal your online status, your green dot will always appear on the map, and anyone nearby will see you.

This question comes of fairly often and many of us recommend that, if you need peace and quiet, you:

  • Log in and ignore any incoming IMs. Tell your friends that you like quiet time. If they don't understand, get new friends.
  • Set "Busy" mode (which unfortunately also repels anything anyone tries to give you, or you try to purchase).
  • Create an alt. This is the only sure-fire way to become "invisible".

We've also heard of (or experienced!) drama resulting from friends discovering that someone has tried to hide. So, either don't hide, or don't get discovered.

;-).
