Is anything done about the selling of stolen assets from other videogames?

Question

Browsing through the market it's easy for me to find models and textures broght over from other games and sold on the SL marketplace. I don't think these companies would be happy to see people making money from their imported assets. Just wondering if it's ever dealt with.

The only "somebody" who can deal with it is the company or person who got ripped off. By U.S. federal law (the Digital Millenium Copyright Act -- DMCA), nobody else has the legal standing to file a complaint.  Also, by that same law, Linden Lab is required to remove any contested material as soon as they receive a valid complaint from the copyright holder.

Linden Lab recieves and acts on DMCA complaints regularly.  They do not have enough staff to examine every single item that is posted in Marketplace.  Even if they could, they could not necessarily prove that an item was stolen -- rather than copied under license -- without getting confirmation from the copyright holder. In any case, they cannot safely act on accusations submitted by third parties.
