 I was thinking about getting a photo contest board but have no idea how it works can someone let me know from an owners point of view does it help with traffice can you makee money on them  what is the best one

The best place to ask is in the General Discussion forum, or perhaps in the Merchants forum.  There are many ways to run photo contests, and you do need to be careful not to run them in a way that would violate the Linden Lab policies against gambling or skills gaming. Contests can be fun for participants and for visitors to your area, whether they generate traffic and income, or not.
