Read the information in the Knowledge Base at https://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Billing/ta-p/700037 to understand how to register a payment method ( a credit card or a PayPal or Skrill account).  Then visit your dashboard at secondlife.com and look on the left sidebar for the Linden Exchange, where you can buy L$.  The current exchange rate is very close to L$1000/$4 USD.  You can live quite comfortably in SL with no more than you would spend in a week for a few cups of coffee in RL.  In fact, unless you want to go wild buying things, you can live for ages with no L$ at all, or with just what you can pick up as pocket change by playing games like PaleoQuest or LindenRealms.
