Search for locations and profile windows appear but the interior of those windows stays grayed out.

Well that's not much to go on.

My guess would be that your in-viewer browser is having trouble, but that's pretty catch-all.

Try these two things:-

1. Can you get to search.secondlife.com through a regular browser?
2. Can you get to www.google.com through the in-viewer browser?

If (1) works but (2) does not then you will need to cleanly uninstall and reinstall the Second Life viewer.

If (2) works but (1) doesn't you're having content blocking issues, probably related to a system-wide adblocker, firewall or other content restriction device running above your browsing on your network.

The Search Windows [the correct name for these are SL Dialogs] use information provided by the SLPlugin.exe program that is installed with the Second Life Viewer. If your PC's Firewall Protection software is preventing the execution of multiple instances of this program then you will get the symptom you are experiencing.

SLPlugin.exe allows for asynchronous communication [meaning multiple sessions at once] with the servers at Linden Research in order to access various services like maps, search engines, etc.

Without knowing what firewall software you are using, all I can recommend is that, as a test, you locate it and temporarily disable it. If the SL Viewer works correctly after this,  add SLPlugin.exe or the C:\Program Files (x86)\SecondLifeViewer directory to the firewall exceptions list.
