I never picked this avatar. It was selected when I signed in, I didn't even notice it. How do I change it? Do I have to start all over again?

if you don't choose any of the other starter avatars shown to you on the sign up page you get the default one. but no you don't have to start over

there are more in the library folder in your inventory that you can try out or you can shop for whole avatars or avatar components (shape, skin, hair, clothes etc) or make some yourself, it's fun

Go to the Library section of your Inventory and in the Clothes folder you will find all the Default avatars that you saw on login in the subfolder called "Initial Outfits" as well as others that you haven`t seen before outside of that folder.

You have lots of choices.  You can use one of the many default avatars.  They are located in the Library folder of your inventory.  You can buy an avatar or even find free ones inworld.  You can buy them in the Marketplace.  And you can even create your own using the Edit Appearence tools.
