Is the UUID of a copied prim different from the original prim?

Just to add to Rolig's answer,  this means that an object's UUID changes each time you rez it.   The uuids of textures, sounds and avatars remain constant, but if you want to use an object's uuid in a script (normally the only time you need to know an object's UUID) you have to grab the UUID at runtime.
