About buying land?

Hi,

I'm thinking about buying some land... can anybody point me in the direction of a good "how to" guides, as all the land links in the wikki seem broken.

Also, how do you search for available land? - the main land auctions on here don't seem to have a lot of listings, and the land sales tab in search seems broken in viewer 2 at the moment. (Even more broken than the rest of search in viewer 2).

Hmmm, if the search is broken in Viewer 2 you might want to log in with the 1.23 viewer long enough to find some land.  Often, looking at Land Sales in Search is the best cuz you can restrict it to Mainland and to the rating type you want.  You can also restrict it to >= a certain size and/or <= a certain L$.  And you can sort the entries by L$/m, L$, area, and type.

Alternatively, you can call up the map and have it show you land for sale -- all the yellow areas -- but that way can be hard unless you at least have a general area you wish to look at.

The wikis Irene gave are great--reading those are how I started investing in land.  I am not a huge landowner at any single time (1/2 sim max), and am not a real estate dealer, although I buy and sell land to move--just personal stuff, not to make a "living."  My favorite thing to do is just search the world map and click on all the yellow patches that interest me--probably not too efficient, but good fun.  The auctions are okay, but very limited selection.  But think about how you want to use the land when you search, and consider the terrain and the neighbors.  Being next to a popular site may make a laggy home!  I like protected roadsides and beaches, but they tend to be more expensive--not always, though.  The most important part if you are not setting out to be a realtor is to have fun with it.  Experiment.  If you get a parcel you don't like--you can sell it and get a new one--there's LOTS to choose from!

I agree, the important thing is to have fun in SL. I have no intention of become a major landlord, I just want a place of my own to build and play. But I am considering becoming a small scale landlord just as a way of covering the land tier costs.

I'll try the wiki links again, but I tend to find about half the SL wiki links never work and come up with "page missing" error messages. Is it just me?

It is very frustrating, as I am sure lots of the information I ask about here on the forums is hidden somewhere in the wiki, if I could only just find and get at it. But I'll have another go at those Land links.
