You have it backwards.  You can't lose something by breaking the link. You break a link by losing something, either by deleting the original from your inventory or by having your inventory cache corrupted. So, the broken link is a symptom, not the problem.

If your local cache was corrupted, the correct solution is to delete it and force the servers to send a fresh copy of your inventory and create a new cache.  Don't use the Clear Cache button in Preferences to do that.  Do it manually and carefully, following these instructions >>> http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/fs_cache_clear

IMO, the most important sentence in the instructions is the one that says, "While inventory repopulates, do not teleport anywhere, and do not attempt to access anything in your inventory."   Just be patient.

The broken link should disappear at that point because it is no longer relevant.  If it doesn't, you can delete it yourself.  You will need to create a new link, however, by adding the restored inventory item to the outfit that had the old link in it.

The way to avoid inventory cache problems, in general, is to be sure that you have a strong, reliable Internet connection (preferably not wireless).  That will reduce the possibility of crashes, which sometimes result in cache corruption.
