They most often come with the product they are designed for.  In your inventory, they have the symbol of a little shirt with a grid pattern on it.

Sometimes, the outfit's creator will also include the alpha mask as a texture map.  This has the symbol of a texture, and can be downloaded to your hard drive.  From there, you can use a paint program like Photoshop to modify it, and then upload the new alpha mask texture back to SL.

In a few cases, an alpha mask is sold by itself.  For example, on the Marketplace you can find packs of foot masks.  These can sometimes be used to salvage an older pair of shoes that used the old "invisiprim" method to hide the distorted avatar foot shape.
